'Play It Again' is going to be 'song of the year'? Exactly where will that take place since it will barely crack the top 10 in airplay @ Mediabase on their year-end cart when the 2014 chart year ends six weeks from Saturday on Nov. 15th. Taking only airplay into consideration is beyond ridiculous. Like dm said, a song like Beat of the Music or Lettin' The Night Roll may finish hear the top in terms of airplay, but those songs should not be in the same sentence as PIA as far as how big they are. PIA was a 4 week BB #1, two week MB #1, a hot country songs #1 and is nearly double platinum in sales.

Yup, and the video has 17 million views, which is extremely impressive for just a live concert footage video. Not only is it almost double platinum in sales, but the album it comes from is double platinum too. I'm not even a fan of the song, but you can't deny it's appeal.

Something about this reminds me of "Over and Over" by Nelly and Tim McGraw.

If "Over and Over" were released today, it would probably be a #1 Country song. Think about that for a second.

If "Over and Over" were released today, it would probably be a #1 Country song. Think about that for a second. I think it'd be too bland to go all the way. At least this song has some semblance of flavor to it. "Yes, but burnt horse crap on moldy Wonder Bread has some semblance of flavor to it too." Shut up, snarky side. You know I actually LIKE this song.

The sales and callouts are fantastic! This will be 3 weeks at #1.
It's fast becoming one of many favorites now, even though I wasn't really feeling it when it was first released. I wonder how many Jason fans that freaked out on its release date have now grown to love the song? In hindsight, it's a great career move to experiment with a new sound as the 1st single. Well done, Mr. Aldean!

Eh I would think Jason would rather want to be an opening act for Garth Brooks because that's a bigger tour right now.

Well BBR definitely isn't keeping their cards close to the chest here. This is their ad running in Country Aircheck this week...they're requesting max spins from the 12th thru the 26th, which makes it very clear that they'll be going for at least 2 weeks at #1 here. I think that Sam Hunt will be in a position to take over #1 after Jason is done, to coincide with the release of Sam's album on the 27th.

^On Mediabase he has a 10 million lead in audience, so I wonder if they might be able to squeak out 3 weeks at #1 before Sam/Chase/Blake.

^On Mediabase he has a 10 million lead in audience, so I wonder if they might be able to squeak out 3 weeks at #1 before Sam/Chase/Blake. They could try, but that gap will disappear in a hurry. Sam gained over 4 million on Billboard last week, and he's up another 2 million in just the last 2 days alone at Mediabase. Sam is maybe 12-13 million (on BB) from going #1, which means he'd need to average 3 mil a week over the next 4 weeks (including this one) to get to #1 by Monday the 3rd of November (that allows 1 week at #1 for "Dirt" and 2 weeks at #1 for "Burnin' It Down" before "Leave The Night On" takes over...OR 3 weeks at #1 for Jason and none for FGL, and then Sam takes over). So I think that, if Aldean wants that chance at 3 weeks at #1, his best bet is to try to top the charts this coming Sunday (MB) and Monday (BB), holding Luke to 1 week at #1 and blocking FGL from the top spot completely. That actually could happen, too, as Jason is barely 100 spins behind FGL on MB now, and only 1.8 million in audience separates the 2 songs. In today's update, FGL gained 86 spins and 287k in audience, while Jason gained a whopping 167 spins and 874k in audience. I think this could be one of those instances in which a label (in this case, Broken Bow) sees an opportunity to jump to #1 a little earlier than planned. Based off that Aircheck ad, I think BBR was planning on waiting until next week to start going for #1, but since Republic/FGL has so far been dragging their heels a bit this week, BBR could very well be trying to get to #1 already by the end of this week. There's still a good chance that "Dirt" will sneak in at #1 before Jason gets there, but again, so far this week, Republic/FGL seems to be taking more of a "wait and see" approach in regards to Luke Bryan, and it definitely looks like BBR is already going full-steam ahead with "Burnin' It Down". Tomorrow could tell us a lot, especially now that Luke has shown signs that he's peaked ("Roller Coaster" posted a gain yesterday, but it lost 250k today). So I wouldn't be surprised if Republic Nashville really jumps in after seeing Luke's drop today, and realizing that Aldean isn't gonna wait around. If "Dirt" is not #1 this coming Sunday/Monday, then I don't think it will get there at all. Once Aldean passes them, they are unlikely to pass him back, so they need to get to the top before "Burnin' It Down" overtakes "Dirt".

Country radio wouldn't dare have played 'Over & Over' today anymore than they would have played it when it set airplay records at top 40 radio in 2003 just as 'Live Like You Were Dying' did at country radio in 2004 and 'Jesus, Take The Wheel' did in 2006.
Tim deserves plenty of credit for recording a risky song although he certainly knew that very few members of his fanbase would ever hear it because the two formats shared a lot fewer listeners in 2003 than they do today; the nineties and a huge portion of the following decade were an unmitigated disaster for top 40 radio, which lost 116 stations between 1988 & 2003, or almost HALF or the panel of R&R reporters.
Consequently there was no way country radio would have touched it back then as the format boomed just as it had starting in the late eighties as top 40 fell apart at the seams, and they certainly wouldn't touch it today, since a ton of today';s country PDs had a top 540 background and wouldn't slit their format's own throats and bleeding millions of listeners in the process as top 40 radio did for the better part of 15 years.

No confirmed add date yet but he announced on Jimmy Fallon earlier this week that "Just Gettin' Started" will be the second single.

No confirmed add date yet but he announced on Jimmy Fallon earlier this week that "Just Gettin' Started" will be the second single. Not surprising, it really feels like a typical Aldean lead single (rocker, mildy catchy but not among the better tracks on the album). I can tolerate it much more than this song, but I don't think it's all that strong of a track. It's just as well though, with so many rockers on Old Boots, it was inevitable that one was going to be the next single. And it's also not the abhorrent Laid Back, which is a victory in and of itself.

Republic Nashville probably decided to play nice with Jason Aldean and Broken Bow this week and not fight to get "Dirt" a second week at #1. "Burnin' It Down" will be the lucky one at the end of this chain of one-week #1 singles ("Hope You Get Lonely Tonight," "Roller Coaster," "Dirt," "Burnin' It Down") that will get two weeks at #1. Sam Hunt and Blake Shelton should follow Jason Aldean up at the top.

The big update this had last week Wednesday morning (+167 spins, +874k audience) caused this one to have a nasty update today. Jason loses almost 90 spins and 500k in audience in today's update. For a second there I was really surprised/confused, but then I remembered the random big update he had last week. Jason's bullet is now down to just 7, but with FGL down over 800k in this morning's update, Jason should still have no trouble taking over the #1 spot by Friday morning. And I am sure that his bullet/spins/audience will probably start to increase again with tomorrow's update. Well, that would make sense, considering that Brian and Tyler wrote the song...

Jason Aldean retains the #1 spot on the Mongrel chart based solely on airplay and streaming (both with a bullet). All album pre-order digital downloads fall off the download chart. (FGL will most certainly experience this next week, also)

I wonder if we might see a split on the charts this week? It seems clear that Jason will take over the #1 spot on Billboard, but it might be possible for "Dirt" to spend a 2nd week at #1 on Mediabase.
Both of them would be able to say they had 2-week #1's then..."Dirt" would be 2 weeks MB/1 week BB, and Jason would be 1 week MB (Sunday the 26th) and 2 weeks BB (Monday the 20th and Monday the 27th).
Jason is already tracking at #1 on Billboard and FGL lost over 500k on Mediabase today, yet with only 3 days left in the MB week, FGL still leads by almost 330 spins there. Jason gained 74 spins in today's update but FGL gained 5 spins themselves--despite their audience loss--so it's possible that Republic Nashville is hoping that their spins lead will enable them to hold on to the Mediabase #1 spot through Saturday. And yes, I know the chart doesn't go by spins, but spins seem to affect the points more than audience does (for example, Tim McGraw is 4 million ahead of Scotty McCreery, but he still trails him by more than 100 spins and he trails Scotty in overall chart position too).
Just a theory, though. Jason could easily take it as well.

Republic Nashville could probably have gotten a second week at #1 for "Dirt" if they wanted given how close this'll be, but I suspect they just pulled "Dirt" without putting up a fight.

I would love to see if my truck could talk be released Iove that song I am hearing it may be "Just Gettin' Started" I like that song in fact I really enjoyed a lot of this album. I didn't think I would becuase I relally liked his last effort and usually when that happens I build up expectations that aren't met. But this album is great and I don't think there are too many bad choices on it for singles. I just thought that he should follow up a song that for me is more in line with his rock type stuff but softer kinda like dirt road anthem which is where burning it down would fall for me and I figured he'd keep to his usual of following something like that with more of a ballad. But hopefuly if my truck could talk gets released eventually becuase it's great

O.K., Billboard. After not getting the midweek update in two weeks, I finally got it this past Thursday. However, did you forget to rank Burnin' It Down on the sales chart? I do not see it there.

"Burnin It Down" had negative sales this week due to iTunes "Complete my Album" feature. If a song sells 80,000 copies but 100,000 people used "Complete My Album", then the sales this week is -20,000.

I was going to do a comparison between Jason Aldean (#1) and Carrie Underwood (#5) on the mongrel chart.
