Well it seems he is going to perform with Mary J Blige at the Grammys, so probably he will perform Stay with me. In the case the release of Lay me down as single right now just doesn't make any sense Unless he is to win AOTY and Lay Me Down closes the Grammys which would be epic.

Why they're going with this and not "Like I Can" is beyond me. While this song itself is good, I have a really hard time listening to it because of the chorus. His vocals in the first line are shrill, harsh, and grating. The acoustic version is better. I love "I'm Not The Only One" and was actually looking forward to "Like I Can" being the next single. I'm just really surprised they're releasing this instead. It'll be interesting to see how it performs, that's for sure. "Like I Can" was definitely the safe choice, this one is more of a risk. And I'm not sure what their motivation is to take said risk.

For what it's worth, AllAccess now lists this as impacting next week (2/10). The corresponding date is also listed for Hot AC and rhythmic.

Well, i don't think he will win Album of the year, in fact i will be surprised if he wins more than Best new artist (and everybody remembers Esperanza Spaulding, well, everybody remembers what happenened not her). Maybe he will do a mashup of his songs to give this a push. I know Adele sung Rolling in the deep instead of Set fire to the rain, but it was a very different situation (and it was a mistake even if in the end Set fire to the rain was a big hit)
If the adds date was moved that makes more sense, 20 adds is not bad, and there are plenty of artist which get more adds in the following weeks, but going from more than 60 to 20 is a big step back when there's absolutely no reason for that to happen because I'm not the only one was a hit by itself and the album is still selling very well

One of my friends said he sings like he has hot food in his mouth, so now I can't hear him sing without thinking about that and laughing hysterically.
But, anyway, this song is boring. As far as it hitting the top 10, I think it could go either way.

I don't think the song is boring at all (but it's not the apropiate song after two ballads). At least the video has a positive effect, the song is up more than 50 positions on itunes, back in top 200
I don't know how it'll do in the USA, but probably it will do very well on UK charts if he perform this at the Brits

As far as it hitting the top 10, I think it could go either way. Yeah, he slurs his words together, especially live. It's strange and often distracting from his really good voice. On a side note, how awesome is it to finally have a completely openly gay singer being this successful? And his music videos are starting more and more to reflect that. This would not have happened even just a few years ago.

I like the video. It's simple and there's not a lot going on but the visuals were really great and I loved how the funeral scene transitioned into the wedding and then again when it transitioned into Sam alone in the pew. From my limited film knowledge, I thought it was technically well done.

On a side note, how awesome is it to finally have a completely openly gay singer being this successful? And his music videos are starting more and more to reflect that. This would not have happened even just a few years ago. I expect this time radio embraces Adam Lambert when he release new material. I know Adam is way more polarizing than Sam, but with the right song i think it'll work this time. And talking about Adam, i think he should be studied as how not to launch the career of a new artist. There were tons of buzz around him when he ended his run in American Idol. They wasted the first impact releasing Time for miracles which wasn't a single, then releasing a song with racy lyrics (not the best you can do when you have an artist whose looks are divisive). If they started everything with whataya want from me (it was obvious that his ballads where the less polarizing and the most aclaimed of his performances). The second era is better forget it, it's a shame the lack of support most talent shows contestants receive after the label capitalizes the after show popularity. The truth recent years have been quite better in terms of gay representation with Sam, Mary Lambert, Tegan and Sara, Mika or A great big world And talking about the video, i think he must keep the "tell a story" concepts to his videos. He is not a visual artist but from Leave your lover all his videos are way better than Money on my mind and Stay with me By the way, this song is number 8 on the bubbling under chart

Maybe Sam Smith decided against Like I Can because the video featured his ex boyfriend in it. I don't think he takes break ups well and maybe he thought it was bad karma to release that song.
Also it looks like he wanted to do this specific gay wedding video and it fit this song.

He should perform part of this during his Grammy performance tonight to spark some interest in it

He should perform part of this during his Grammy performance tonight to spark some interest in it If he is smart he will do it, sing the first verses the chorus and then sing Stay with me with Mary J. Not giving this a push will be a big mistake (it could make totally the difference in terms of performance of the song) On the Uk chart Like i can is at 17, I'm not the only one at 31 and Stay with me at 33. The album is at 4

Well he sang STay with me (expected since he was going to sing with Mary J), i heard it was a very good performance (the song is at 5 right now). It was a lost opportunity to promote the new single but he score more wins at the grammys that i expected so maybe that's enough to radio give a push to the new song (it at 84 right now)

This is not looking too promising. Yes, i know it's a big overreaction but this is pulsemusic and things need to be blown over proportion. The number of adds is not bad (not particulary great for someone with two big hits and 4 grammys but not bad) but Ariana with similar number of adds is near top 40 and this not even charted yet which in my opinion means lack of interest. In fact the grammys didn't have any positive effect on airplay (apart of Urban Ac) in contraposition with sales (even this is holding quite well).
To be honest if he wasn't going to sing this at the grammys the election as single is even more difficult to understand. As i say, i love the song and i think it would be a perfect fourth or fifth single, in fact i think it will be huge in Uk if he performs this at the brits, the difference is in UK he released Money on my mind and Like i can. The problem is not if it flops, he is selling too many albums and a big part of his audience is adult so it won't kill his buzz, the problem is flopping without even taking a risk, because if he would released Money on my mind and flops at least the song gives him and edge, is risky and polarizing.
I thought this will start strong and probably start to show signs of weakness near top 20 but i'm starting to doubt the strong start

He didn't choose what he sang, the GRAMMY association did... He can't help that. Give this a little time before we rush into a conclusion, you might be right, but we literally haven't seen it do anything yet.

Yes, i know, but i wanted a little overreaction to feel integrated on the forum I understand the grammys, if they let everybody sing whatever they want the show will be full of new songs the audience barely knows when what they want is the biggest hits of the year

Now it's moving at good rhythm on pop and hot ac. I think it'll probably have more problems in other formats, on AAA generally after crossing to pop artist have more trouble getting hits there (Ed Sheeran started on that format but Thinking out loud doesn't look like a future top 5 on that format), and of course on AC and Urban AC he has two hits on top 10 so i doubt he will be able to make a third climb those charts. Anyway the song is top 100 on itunes again, and hopefully will start to climb there too

Heard this on the radio and it felt really weird until the last 45 seconds of the song.
