My roommate is dating someone who likes Mariah, so this morning, he sat down to learn a couple of Mariah songs on the piano as a surprise. The first was "We Belong Together." And as he started playing the chords, neither of us could remember a single word! Seriously, not a one! So then he suggested "Always Be My Baby," and I was like, "oh yeah, that's probably my favorite Mariah Carey song." This time, I managed to get part of the chorus but still had absolutely NO CLUE when it came to the verses. These were songs I've heard hundreds of times and thought I knew by heart...

E=MC squared has a lot of songs that sound very different from each other, and if they were released as singles, I don't think they'll be forgotten like say, Thank God I Found You or Touch My Body. "Side Effects," "Migrate," "I'll Be Loving You Long Time," "I'm That Chick," and "Cruise Control" would definitely be standouts among Mariah's singles.

^^^^^^ but will they remembered two year from now, how about 5 years??? You cant really use her new material to say she's memorable because they are something that a fan is sinking their teeth into and will listen to over and over. Songs fade over time and only time will tell if any thing from EMC2 will be lasting.
Vision of Love will always be my favorite song from her so I guess I can say she's memorable to a degree but it is very true that I find myself struggling to remember exactly how some of her songs go because I will undoubtably start mixing them up with another one of her songs. Fantasy and Dreamlover used to do that to me all the time.
What it comes down to is that I dont think she really cares much about having a legacy that stands out. She likes making music for the times and appealing to her core fans while drawing a few new ones in. She's loaded, beautiful and gets to work at the one thing she loves. The rest is , as they say, gravy.

I really think it's Hero and All I Want For Christmas Is You that will be remembered. She made the stupid decision of releasing a We Belong Together rip off just months after the original (cant remember the name of it right now) that just robbed the legacy. Ask someone to sing Touch My Body or Bye Bye in 2 years and I bet they couldn't.
The only good news of having songs with no impact is the bad one's don't get remembered either - like that one from Glitter with the 80's beat, the 49c cd singles and the slutty drag car video. People recognise Glitter as a flop but don't remember why it was so bad. Maybe that's a good thing

I think Mariah has 4 memorable hits: Vision of Love, Hero, All I Want For Christmas Is You, and We Belong Together. Thats it really. I don't think "Vision of Love" is a classic. Its a great song, one of her best and most distinct, but I doubt the average joe would remember it unfortunately. But I agree with the other 3 mentioned. Yeah...seriously don't think I've heard Vision Of Love since 1990...her 2000s songs are def. gettin replayed a lot more than her 90s songs did (even during the 90s) All I Want For Christmas Is You is kinda a separate category IMO...there's not a lot of competition in terms of new/original catchy Christmas songs recorded by current artists

I think part of it is that Mariah (or more accurately, Mariah's team of songwriters and producers) try to gear her album towards current radio trends, what ever they were at the time. Her songs fit in well with the current radio hits of the moment, but once radio trends changed, many of her older songs got lost in the shuffle of new radio trends. Mariah Carey has never been revolutionary. She has tried to fit in to current radio, and has done a nice job of that over the years. But to be remembered you really need to offer something different, interesting and unique and an artist needs to change radio trends, not follow them. You nailed it as far as my opinion is concerned. Just as an example, the one song she's recorded that I'd consider a genuine classic is "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and that song didn't follow current radio trends at all.

If you asked me 2-3 years from now to sing Touch My Body & Bye Bye, I most likely would be able to.

Hot AC (KBIG) plays a lot of her old stuff as well...

Yeah, I hear a lot of Mariah on the radio here, too.
"Dreamlover", "Always Be My Baby", "Fantasy", "Hero", and "Someday" get a lot of play here in addition to the occasional TEOM single here or there.
I think "Touch My Body" has the potential to get an okay amount of recurrent airplay over the next few years.

Always Be My Baby is probably her most played older song from the 90's. It's still played every now and then on AC, Hot Ac, Urban, Rhythmic and Pop.

I keep seeing people talking about Borderline..what is that? It can't be too significant because everyone I asked here in my house has never heard of that song.

First of all, in Mariah's defense: I don't think radio has embraced 90s music that much yet, it usually takes about 15-20 years for a passed decade to dominate the golden airwaves. I actually think that's the problem though...90s music is extremely popular on Hot AC and AC, and Mariah's not showin up on most of these stations as much as Alanis, Goo Goo Dolls, Hootie and the Blowfish, Matchbox Twenty, Sheryl Crow, Jewel, etc. Agree though that it's not fair to compare her to 80s artists like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Prince, etc. I think you might need to look at the AC charts before you say that. Mariah has some of the most played songs on AC.

Yeah about people staying on topic, I don't see what this has to do with Mariah or any of her songs? Actually, I think it has a lot to do with her current song and some of her songs from her slump period. Like with WIU and NA, TMB is not a song that's going to be remembered even 3 months from now. Hopefully her new album will have some more appealing and memorable stuff (i.e.: WBT.) Three months later and still a top ten hit.

I looked up a couple of other songs by comparison from other artists that seemed to be their most popular songs.
Vogue by Madonna = 2.619 My Heart Will Go On by Celine = 1.424 I Will Always Love You by Whitney = 2.619
Comapre to Mariah's songs from before 2000
Always Be My Baby = 4.408 Hero = 3.755 Dreamlover = 2.029 Fantasy = 1.385
Now I don't know if those are Madonna's, Whitney's or Celine's most played songs but just wanted to use them as a comparison since those appear to be their most popular.

I don't know if 'Vogue' is Madonna's most played song but it definitely sounds very dated. How does 'Like A Prayer' compare?

I agree with you- the only memorable ones are "Hero," and "Vision of Love" and a few others- yet she's had 18 number ones- I think the critics are right- they all pretty much sound alike. Some have even accused her of re-writing the same song over and over. The Beatle's sound changed from album to album. No one is going to confuse "Hey, Jude' with "I Want to Hold Your Hand."
