NEW JACKSON MAKES IT SONY IN DECEMBER
Stringer and Barnett Will Have Five of Top Six, with Jackson, Boyle, Glee, Evancho and R. Kelly
December 15, 2010
You know it’s that time of year when Michael Jackson rises again.
Epic’s MICHAEL, the late superstar’s second official posthumous release (after last year’s This Is It soundtrack), hit retail Tuesday, and first-week sales estimates are now between 225-250k for the album.
That would put the Moonwalker in a vigorous three-horse race with Sony stable mate Susan Boyle’s still-reigning The Gift and Big Machine frisky colt Taylor Swift’s Speak Now for #1 on next week’s HITS Top 50 sales chart.
Those totals are based on one-day sales reports from those hardy music retailers who haven’t abandoned their stores to set up Christmas tree lots.
The next three positions are all Team Stringer/Barnett acts, too, with Columbia’s Glee Cast Christmas and Jackie Evancho albums vying with Jive/JLG’s debuting R. Kelly, with estimates for the latter in the 150-160k range, which would beat most industry forecasts, as the veteran R&B superstar tends to do. That would give Sony five of the top six albums on next week’s chart.
Next highest debut comes from Bad Boy/Interscope’s Diddy Dirty Money, the latest project from P. Diddy, which would seem to be in the 60-65k range after an appearance several weeks ago on Saturday Night Live.
American Idol alumnus Crystal Bowersox’s 19/Jive/JLG debut is on target for 45-50k, with Atlantic’s Tank aiming for 40-45k and Jive/JLG’s Ciara between 35-40k.
Last 2010 release date is Tuesday, with Geffen’s Keyshia Cole, J/RMG’s Jamie Foxx and Interscope’s Keri Hilson the remaining big names on the schedule.
The market was up 11% vs. last week, down 15% vs. same week last year and still down 13% year to date.
Now please excuse us while we get rotten, stinking drunk at the office holiday party and completely embarrass ourselves by throwing up all over the copy machine.

Wow, with good music, R. Kelly can really shine. I'm sure holiday sales are helping, but I think he would still have done something close to those numbers any time of the year.
The girl from AGT is doing really good :O AI needs to follow in AGT footsteps and have the winner release an EP in like June or July to help continue interest before their debut in the winter.
Crystal selling 50k?! :O Didn't Lee do like 25? lol =)

Expected for Crystal. It was never in doubt that she would sell more than Lee.
I expect SuBo to retain the #1 position due to Christmas being near.

Ciara should have done over 50k. But even though "Ride" was a hit, "Gimme Dat" hasn't done a thing and her promo has been subpar.

I'm rooting for Taylor. I would be cool with MJ getting it.

Crystal selling 50k?! :O Didn't Lee do like 25? lol =) Lee did 39 and change. I expected Lee and Crystal (and possibly Casey) to do similar debut numbers, 40-50k...Crystal is going to outsell Lee but it's not really by that much. It doesn't seem like RCA or Jive really have much intent for pushing Lee or Crystal past their debut weeks. Casey may be the one who does the best in the long run; it seems the Idols who go country usually get more long-term promotion, rather than the label just throwing the album out there and then expecting them to sink or swim solely on the Idol name recognition. Ciara :( Why do Jive/her management hate her so much? The lack of support she's had for the past 3-4 years now is pathetic. I suspect SuBo is going to trend upward a bit later in the week.

I hope MJ pulls this off. Not surprised at Ciara at all & R Kelly has a very good laid back R&B album that may get some love at next year's Grammys.

Amazing sales for Taylor, she hasn't really been promoting for a couple of weeks and she's increasing, which is surprising since even Susan isn't with a christmas album. If she ends up on the latter part of her prediction she should be near 2.6 million, wonder if she'll be able to reach the 3 million mark by the end of this year...

Good to see Queen Ciara reaching her expectations. ;) Exactly. And, I don't want to hear people blaming her management or Jive. She has better promotion than most and Jive has spent a furtune on A-list producers, expensve videos, etc. The fact is that the music is only okay and people are not interested in her. Time for a reality show because her record deal is just about up.

Go Jacko! Very surprised how well R. Kelly is selling. Thought he'd flop (=under 100k)

I figured MJ's album would do at least 200K. As someone mention, though, the numbers are underwhelming, on the whole. We'll see how much Christmas week lifts sales for non-holiday titles.

I Hope Michael gets it this week. Itd be nice to see him at number one, one week. That album should go gold.
Im happy I underpredicted Crystal, i had been saying 20-35k so Im happy shes landing around the 45k mark. Overall she wont be going gold, and i think 250k is out of reach, but at least for now shes doing better than Lee. Lets see how Casey does, im not expecting much better.
Ciara :(

who the hell said ciara's videos were expensive? did you see ride? it was literally just her, ludacris, a nice car, and a mechanical bull in front of a white screen. and yeah, her sales are awful. great for r. kelly though!

If Crystal Bowersox won and had a better promotional push, she could have at least sold near 100K. Does she even have a single on? Anyway, her sales are still low but I hope it will sell better than Lee just because.... I was hoping to see an album sell 300-500k at this time of the year, oh well :( But I hope three albums will sell 200K+

Time for a reality show because her record deal is just about up. "Ride" was cheap as hell and GD and "Speechless" probably too knowing Jive. They don't put money in her. That said, blame definitely can't be put solely on the label. A lot of interest in Ciara has been lost over the years dating back to "The Evolution" era when she first began alienating parts of her audience.

She still had potential to sell had she'd been managed right. The problems during 'The Evolution' were due to her change in management, not her material. Her core audience remained as strong as ever. She lost her pop audience.
Anyway, the numbers are terrible. She isn't the (only) one to blame. There are several reasons to why she's underperformed consecutively.

The problems with "The Evolution" wasn't only the management, it was the fact that it was the era that alienated her pop audience. She started out smashing both pop and urban, urban only became her "core" audience because of TE which her team realized was a mistake hence them scrambling to find back the balance between them ever since. But yeah there's a lot of diff reasons for this.

Wow, surprised by Crystal's numbers! She doesn't even have a single getting airplay yet. I voted for her on the show but I did not pick up the album. I'm just not finding myself having much interest in it.
