The reason why Adele is doing well isn't because of lack of illegal downloading but because of a few reasons. Her main audience is the late night show circuit so it's a little easier to promote. Also, it's the highest form of flattery when many popular artists give props. For example I am a fan of Daughtry and when tweeted good things about Adele his fanbase at least checked it out. Critical aclaim and grammy's really help as well.

The reason Adele is doing so amazingly is because she released a genuinely good cd that stands out against all of the upbeat pop cds out there and has somehow gained hype from multiple audiences. I see teenagers playing her all the time at the same time as adults. The sky is the limit when you appeal to multiple audiences and release a cd that is generally considered amazing.

^^ I know they definitely include iTunes sales in the final total but I'm not exactly sure if there is a set method as to how they compile their data in their first, second, third updates. Perhaps they received more sales data from Britney's label than Wiz's at this point of the week.

I still don't get why everyone is saying "this is bad for a Britney debut" Baby One More Time - #1, 120k. 1999 Oops! I Did It Again - #1, 1.3 million. 2000 Britney - #1, 770k. 2001 In The Zone - #1, 609k. 2003 GH:MP - #4, 240k. 2004 Blackout - #2, 290k. 2007 Circus - #1, 505k 2008 She's only had one opening that sold more than this since her real comeback (Blackout). You really can't figure it out, even after posting that list? It's her second lowest first week sales for a studio album ever, behind only her debut. Yes and based off the list, she isn't a consistent big first week opener.Blackout opened small, Circus opened big, so why anyone is acting surprised is beyond me.

Just so people don't get their hopes up for bigger numbers...
She's not going to (significantly) sell more than 300K.

I don't think the itunes sales have been added in yet. So Britney could possibly sell 300k. Can't wait for the final figures!

If iTunes numbers weren't included yet, I definitely would be more optimistic. She's had #2 position for awhile and had another in the top 15 and both are currently at #3 and #16 respectively.

Why would a video soften the second-week decline? Either way, it's going to drop by at least 60%. Plus, it's not like the HIAM video helped out that track. Most albums sell the bulk of their copies in the first few days, unless it's by an act that appeals to a wide spectrum of audiences- this album/act really doesn't. Thanks for singling out Britney, when in fact, that applies to majority of artists nowadays. You know Holiday Guy always has to mention Britney somehow...it's par for the course at this point.

These updates mean nothing. Until we have 100% there's no way we can predict anything. Only thing we know with these things is that Britney will at least sell 139k, but albums don't really follow any rules, so the Chris Brown comparison isn't accurate.

Thank you, wunder. :)
Yes- Gawd forbid if I discuss an act who has current music out. That would mean I was posting in a... gulp... forum. *shudders*
Wasn't singling out Ms. Spears, but acts who don't necessarily appeal to a wide spectrum of audiences, and whose rabid fanbase snaps up the bulk of debut copies in the first few days of release. For instance, some acts may see a big bump because of weekend shopping, when consumers don't rush out during the week to get the album.

Anything over 300k is a strong opening. Even Britney's "flop" and "GH" had solid openings.

^True, she definitely has a built-in fanbase that will buy new albums in large numbers, regardless. Note, though, that GH: MP did not compete with Shania Twain's GH, which was released during the same week. Like Spears, Twain had had mega-selling albums prior to the GH release. Initial GH albums (mostly those released prior to the iTunes explosion) give an indication of an act's appeal outside of studio albums in "the moment." Twain appeals to a wider audience than Spears, hence her GH has outsold it by more than 2:1. Just saying. :)

Plus "Party For Two" had both a pop and country version getting played and was a bigger radio hit than "My Prerogative".

Blackout was her "flop." Any other time we're told that was the exception for Queen Britney, not the norm. Now it's supposed to show how "inconsistent" she's been? Give me a break. Excluding her debut all her other albums opened north of 500,000. That's having consistently big openings.

Yes, chato, but it's not like "Party For Two" was a major hit by any means. It was top 10 at country, yes, but it fared worse at pop than "My Prerogative," not even breaking the pop top 50.
Plus, pre-iTunes explosion, GH albums really didn't need a big, new hit single to sell decently.

Great sales from Brit. Adele down 2% again? Amazing at how consistant she is selling! Good sales by P!nk also and Avril isn't doing as bad as I thought. Hopefully WTH will pick up again and drive some more sales of the album. Glad to see 19 experiencing a growth in sales too and I hope BEP's sales of "The Beginning" pick up, it's quite a decent album. :)
