Surprisingly, the first time I found Rae Sremmurd's song tolerable. However, I still don't want this to be next #1. It seems that using Black Beatles in Mannequin challenge is not necessary, so I don't get the sales boost of it. On the contrary, I think the late-80's vibe, Stranger Things-esque beat of Black Beatles is what makes the Mannequin Challenge more authentic. The song was growing anyway even without the challenge

"Black Beatles" is now #1 on Spotify US.
Wow.

You know, I don't know how many Spectrum Pulse fans we have here, but he said that he considered BB their best song just about entirely thanks to the production.
That being said... I just listened to it, and I can barely remember any lines from it. If this hits #1... I'll honestly be more ambivalent than anything, unless it blocks Starboy and/or 24K Magic from the top.
But it doesn't have the airplay of either of those two, so let's not worry just yet.

So CSTF has finally passed My House as the most downloaded song of the year, huh? That's kinda cool. Although if we were factoring in the entirety of the songs' points, including the parts that 2015 ate, I have a feeling that the latter would be higher, and Love Yourself would be #1 (correct me if I'm wrong).
But it's very interesting that the two highest selling songs of the year consist of a song that only spent one week at #1 and one that only peaked at #4.

Do most of the streams for Black Beatles even count? I would assume most don't fall under "Music" but haven't followed this trend at all.

What's even more interesting is that perhaps only 1 of the top 5 selling songs will need up making the top 5 of the Year-End Hot 100 (2 if "Stressed Out" can win out in a close battle for the #5 spot against "Panda", but even then "Stressed Out" isn't gonna finish in the top 5 highest selling songs of the year because of "Closer" passing it soon). Anyways, "CAN'T STOP THE FEELING!" and "My House" both felt pretty big, but honestly not as big as some of the songs that are gonna gonna end up selling less like "One Dance", "Work", "Love Yourself", "Closer" and even "Stressed Out". Shows how quickly sales are becoming less and less relevant.

Welcome back to the mid 2000's level of quality, o how i hope 2017 will be less of a disaster(#bringback2015) It's basically 2010 with tropical house instead of normal dance music... Which is worse than 2010... WE DID IT GUYS! WE BEAT 2010! NEXT UP 1997! The only years to beat after this are only in order of terribleness, 2000-2003(it is all a blob), 1990, 2005 and 1991. Less hope it will never get to that level(tenth circle of hell(betrayel to the lords)) again.

"Black Beatles" is #1 on Spotify, #2 on Youtube, and #1 on iTunes. If it can pick up enough radio airplay in time, than it's good. Considering that there aren't many other mainstream rap songs that are hot right now, "Black Beatles" can easily pick up traction.

I assume it would need a huge lead in streaming seeing as "Closer" will be #1 in airplay by 140-150 million BDS impressions.

As much as I want to get rid of closer, if Black Beatles is the song that does it I give up on humanity...

I don't care much for Gucci Mane's part but other than that I don't mind Black Beatles. With that said, I've never heard No Type or No Flex Zone, so I didn't know what to expect from Rae Sremmurd.
Starboy, 24K Magic, Black Beatles...anything to dethrone Closer already (well not Let Me Love You or that Juju thing).

I'll honestly be happy if Juju takes Closer's spot.
Closer isn't terrible, but the idea of a song that unremarkable beating Mariah & Boyz II Men record, and probably keeping it for another 20 years, is absolute travesty.

Is this to say that you think One Sweet Day is a remarkable song? I think it's a nice song by very talented vocalists, but the song itself is cloying and unremarkable. I think OSD's number of weeks at #1 was because the song is by two massive acts at the time who both catered to multiple radio formats. I want to emphasize how talented I think both Mariah and Boyz II Men are - but to me there's no denying that their urban/pop/ac crossover is a key part of how big they both were on the charts at the time - and this song's 4 months at #1 is a testament to that. #1 on 4 radio formats, and #2 on another. Maybe this should go in that "unpopular opinions" thread? Sorry if it's off topic. To me One Sweet Day is much more remarkable in its theme, which feels bigger because it takes on death, dealing with loss and afterlife. "Closer" is just a post-breakup hook up fantasy.

Closer is still decent-ish to me, I'll be really happy if either Starboy or 24k Magic take #1, I'll be even happier if both hit #1. If Black Beatles hits #1, I won't complain at all, but I won't be much happier, considering its about the same quality as Closer in my opinon

The only reason why Closer is so hated now is because it's been number one forever. It if had peaked at #8, the concluding narrative would have been that it didn't do better. Happens with every lengthy number one. For me, Closer is the best double digit number one in years.

It's hard to compete with that. And it wasn't a massive seller when compared to other huge songs of the physical sales era. (I recognize that it may have been deleted, possibly limiting its sales.) Maybe this should go in that "unpopular opinions" thread? Sorry if it's off topic. I think it's remarkable purely on the fact that it's a collaboration between two of the biggest artists of the 90's. It like... makes sense that it has the longest #1 ever. Also, I think that a lot of the other contenders to beat One Sweet Day "felt bigger". BEP in 2009 was a phenomenon. Party Rock Anthem was an anthem (even if it wasn't every critics favorite song). Uptown Funk felt huge. Felt like a real phenomenon as well. I would have been fine if any of those songs beat OSD. Chainsmokers don't feel like a phenomenon at all to me. I mean, they're one of two breakout artists this year (along with 21pilots), but they don't feel like anything really all that special, and neither does this song. I know, it's all subjective.

It's really a matter of personal preference. The only thing that will upset me about it is Starboy being kept from the top spot.

It doesn't really matter if "OSD" catered to multiple radio formats because at the time Hot 100 Airplay didn't include all formats (only Top 40 and AC). I've always wondered if "OSD" could have had a longer run under the chart rules that came about a couple years later since it did so well at multiple formats as you mentioned.

Would you agree that being #2 on Urban radio helped it's Hot 100 performance, even if it was just via increased exposure which would help weekly sales? Sure. I'm just saying had they included all formats for Hot 100 Airplay, it would have helped the song even more.

24K Magic is too weak on streaming, Starboy is too weak on radio & sales to challenge Closer yet, which still isn't losing on radio yet.

The only reason why Closer is so hated now is because it's been number one forever. I wouldn't say that's necessarily true. Look at some of the things that certain YouTube critics like Spectrum Pulse and TheDoubleAgent have had to say about it as soon as it first appeared. :/ The former even reiterated the bad about the song when he just reviewed their EP, Collage.

I had a feeling before the Bruno Mars will struggle in Spotify streaming. People pointed out then about Uptown Funk that did well but I felt like it was a different time and that was like one of the last big singles in sales and when Spotify was not the big factor that it is now. So far Spotify audience lean on to rap and EDM (and younger acts) so it's getting a little predictable, I hope the other acts/genre can breakthrough as well eventually
