Now it's time for 1996 to take its turn in the spotlight. There was a bit more turnover at the top this year, the most since the switch to Soundscan. Seventeen singles topped the R&B chart, but three were double-sided, so we'll be ranking a total of 20 songs. Here they are: Before You Walk Out Of My Life - Monica Like This And Like That - Monica Not Gon' Cry - Mary J. Blige Down Low (Nobody Has To Know) - R. Kelly feat. The Isley Brothers You're The One - SWV Always Be My Baby - Mariah Carey Tha Crossroads - Bone Thugs-N-Harmony You're Makin' Me High - Toni Braxton Let It Flow - Toni Braxton How Do U Want It - 2Pac feat. K-Ci & JoJo California Love - 2Pac feat. Dr. Dre & Roger Troutman I Can't Sleep Baby (If I) - R. Kelly Twisted - Keith Sweat Hit Me Off - New Edition If Your Girl Only Knew - Aaliyah Last Night - Az Yet No Diggity - Blackstreet feat. Dr. Dre Pony - Ginuwine Nobody - Keith Sweat feat. Athena Cage I Believe I Can Fly - R. Kelly YouTube PlaylistSpotify Playlist:Final rankings will use an inverse point system. You may rank whichever version (single edit, remix, etc.) you prefer. Submissions are tentatively due May 26. Links to previous rankdowns: 1976 1977 1978 19791980 1981 1982 1983 1984 1985 1986 1987 1988 19891990 1991 1992 1993 1994 1995Best Of The '80s

So how badly are people gonna tank I Believe I Can Fly because it's R Kelly? Or will the connections to Space Jam and Michael Jordan save the song?

Congrats to Mariah Carey on her second win in a row! Hoping Tupac, Blackstreet, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony can finish high. It'll be an interesting competition for the runner-up spot!

My lord the amount of classics in this group!!
If I put my feelings for R Kelly aside, I actually like every song here.

Congrats to Mariah Carey on her second win in a row! Hoping Tupac, Blackstreet, and Bone Thugs-N-Harmony can finish high. It'll be an interesting competition for the runner-up spot! LMFAO I wouldn't say it is a lock that she wins tbh. Although this isn't Fantasy, so honestly would rather something else win this time tbh. Its an okay song but she has way better IMO. Let someone else have a shot to win this time.

Sent. I'd say I at least somewhat enjoy close to two-thirds of these. I think most of my top songs will make it far. This pretty much applies to this rankdown, too. Though I know my #5 and #6 will most certainly not make it far. I hope at least one of them can somehow at least escape the bottom 5.

Since I had the time, I decided to get this over with and be an early sender. Honestly Idk what exactly to expect this time. Could Mariah win again? or are there others that could have a shot too.

Kicking off the extras is the first charted single and biggest hit for this group. It peaked at #4 on the rap chart, #15 on the R&B chart, and #3 on the Hot 100. It samples Barry White's "Theme From Together Brothers".
C'mon N' Ride It (The Train) - Quad City DJ's
Despite the name, they're not actually from the Quad Cities of Illinois and Iowa. They're from Jacksonville, Florida.
Next, the only single by this group from Atlanta. It peaked at #8 on the R&B airplay chart, #18 on the main R&B chart, and #31 on the Hot 100. It was notably sampled in the So So Def remix to Mariah Carey's "H.A.T.E.U."
The song re-entered the charts in 2016 due to the Running Man Challenge. It peaked at #10 R&B and #27 on the Hot 100.
My Boo - Ghost Town DJ's

Oooh this is a pretty solid and strong list of songs here. Lots of great classics here! I can't wait to rank these songs soon.
I really love both of those extras of "C'Mon Ride the Train" and "My Boo." Both are classic jams!

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE spare I Believe I Can Fly. Hate R Kelly all you want but please do not tank this because his name is attached to it, because it is an amazing song that deserves a fair chance to be ranked well!

Today's extras are two songs that you can rank right now in 50 Years Of Hip Hop: The Rankdown Part 2. First, the biggest hit by this group from Queens. Featured on the soundtrack to Don't Be a Menace To South Central While Drinking Your Juice In The Hood, it peaked at #3 on the rap chart, #13 on the R&B chart, and #33 on the Hot 100. Renee - Lost Boyz
Next, the final single from their album Conspiracy. Featuring The Notorious B.I.G., it topped the rap chart and peaked at #4 R&B and #17 on the Hot 100. Samples "You Can't Turn Me Away" by Sylvia Striplin. Get Money - Junior M.A.F.I.A.

I will just say that Renee was a nice discovery for me on the Hiphop Rankdown and should be decently high for me on there.

I loved hearing "My Boo" on the radio at the time. It felt bigger than its R&B and Hot 100 peaks.

Doin' It - LL Cool J
His next single topped the rap chart and peaked at #4 R&B and #3 on the Hot 100. The popular Trackmasters remix features Total and samples Bernard Wright's "Who Do You Love".
