As promised, back to the '90s we go with the spotlight this time on 1993. With the switch to Soundscan, turnover at the top slowed way down. There were thirteen singles that hit #1 on the chart in '93, but as with 1976, one of those singles was a double-sided hit, so we'll be ranking a total of 14 songs. And here they are: Hip Hop Hooray - Naughty By Nature Nuthin' But a "G" Thang - Dr. Dre (feat. Snoop Doggy Dogg) Freak Me - Silk That's The Way Love Goes - Janet Jackson Knockin' Da Boots - H-Town Weak - SWV Whoomp! (There It Is) - Tag Team Lately - Jodeci Check Yo Self - Ice Cube feat. Das EFX Right Here (Human Nature) - SWV Downtown - SWV Just Kickin' It - Xscape Gangsta Lean - DRS Can We Talk - Tevin Campbell YouTube PlaylistSpotify Playlist:Final points will use an inverse point system. You may rank whichever version (remix, single edit, etc.) you prefer. I've included two versions of "Lately" and "Check Yo Self" in the Spotify playlist, but please rank only ONE version of each song. Submissions are tentatively due December 2. Woww...such a significant drop with number of songs from past rankdowns. I was actually expecting to rank a lot more songs than this. 👀👀👀

'75 had the highest turnover rate for any year in R&B history

I don't dislike long rankdowns per se, but they bring out the worst of my procrastination. I definitely appreciate the years where I can say 'ooh! I know these!' and send off in 5 minutes or less.
Obvious winner is obvious so it's really just seeing who's competing for second here, but 1993 was a good year. I don't dislike any of these songs.

Kicking off our extras is the first charted single by this singer from Dallas by way of Chattanooga and Atlanta. From the Poetic Justice soundtrack, it peaked at #56 on the R&B chart.

Is Janet really an obvious winner though? Idk, maybe not for me, looking at the list right away I saw 2 other contenders competing with Janet for the top spot.
That said, I won't be surprised if I be the lowest rank for TTWLG.

I'm expecting Janet to be #1 since divas tend to win these things and "TTWLG" is loved in general, though she won't be my #1 this time around.

Weak probably has the best chance of pulling off the upset and Can We Talk would too if more of you appreciated men's voices as much as you did their penises but TTWLG definitely has the advantage to start unless more than one person goes out of their way to tank it (and plz don't do that!). It's genuinely a flawless classic regardless of Pulse's diva love so I can't be mad about it.

Today's extra is a song that was not only on the chart at the same time as "Whoomp! (There It Is)", it was actually charted before it. Released by a group from Jacksonville, Florida, it peaked at #3 on the rap chart, #7 on the R&B chart, and #11 on the Hot 100.
Whoot, There It Is - 95 South
The following year, the duo Dis 'N' Dat released an answer song titled "Whoot, Here It Is".

Whoot, There It Is - 95 South My favourite of the two "There It Is" hits tbh. 95 South's is grittier & has that great Bambaataa sample while Tag Team's is more of a sports arena chant, which isn't a bad thing, but they're not really my thing.

Today's extra is by a trio whose members included Angie Stone. Their biggest hit peaked at #10 on Billboard's R&B Airplay chart and #17 on the main R&B chart.

I love TTWLG but Weak really does it for me. Coko's nice high soprano mixed in with the harmonies of Taj and Lele. There is something magical about Weak.

I thought that Right Here was more loved than Weak. I originally thought Right Here could be one of the contenders too, or maybe I am wrong that it is more liked than Weak. We will find out on the Rankdown.

Today's extras are from his only album on the Uptown label, Changes. The lead single, produced and co-written by DeVante Swing of Jodeci, peaked at #19 on the R&B chart. Bryson Tiller sampled it in his song "Still Yours".
All I See - Christopher Williams
The follow-up was his final Top 10 hit, peaking at #7 R&B and was his final Hot 100 entry. Co-written and co-produced by the former Mr. Tamar Braxton, Vince Herbert.

Today's extra was her first Top 40 hit on the Hot 100, peaking at #35. It also reached #10 on the R&B chart and topped the rap chart. It received a Grammy nomination for Best Rap Solo Performance and was the first single by a solo female rapper to be certified gold. Samples "The Payback" by James Brown and has an interpolation of "If It Ain't Rough, It Ain't Right" by Pete Rock & C.L. Smooth.

Today's extras are by this group from Waco, Texas. This song, written and produced by some guy named Robert, peaked at #3 on the R&B chart and #38 on the Hot 100.
Quality Time - Hi-Five
Next, a song from the Menace II Society soundtrack. It peaked at #21 R&B.
Unconditional Love - Hi-Five
Finally, a song from the soundtrack to Sister Act 2: Back In The Habit. Co-produced by Joe, it was their final Top 10 hit, peaking at #10 on the R&B chart, as well as their final Hot 100 entry, peaking at #30. Features vocals by new members Shannon Gill and Terrence Murphy. They replaced Roderick "Pooh" Clark, who was paralyzed following a vehicular crash, and Russell Neal, who left over financial differences.
