Olivia Rodrigo - "obsessed"

i really believe the reason her success this era post-vampire has been so shakey is a: the messy single rollout (bir? and ghb! should not have been pushed at the sameish time) but more importantly b: she's becoming a one trick pony. i'm partly talking sound here (she should have swapped out one of the three consecutive pop punk singles for a ballad or midtempo -- preferably ghm! since it feels the most derivative and it would've broken up the pop punk songs before and after it nicely) but more importantly i'm talking abt her song topics

like, i really hate to bring this up since tHeY oNlY tAlK aBt BrEaKuPs is so often used to demean young female artists, even when it isn't actually true, but yes in the case of olivia literally every single one of her 8 singles has been a breakup track and that needs to change. there's only so many times you can rehash that emotional palette before it starts to feel phoned in and derivative, and that's especially damaging for an artist like olivia whose biggest strength is authenticity. i haven't listened to her second album (partly because it seems so similar to her first, though i am intrigued by its supposed increased 90s influences) but if there was a jealousy, jealousy type song on there then that should have been a no brainer to push as a single and if there wasn't then the someone needs to investigate why she keeps writing abt the same thing over and over and help her get out of her comfort zone a little

She does in fact have song similar to “jealousy, jealousy” on the album. It’s called “pretty isn’t pretty”. It’s sonically more influenced by 2000s’ teen flicks and is probably the most pop-friendly song on the album. No clue why it’s not been pushed as a single yet (granted the streams are not as high as the other album tracks but that’s likely because of its lower placement in the tracklist.

“GUTS” is by all accounts an excellent album. It’s the most acclaimed mainstream album of 2023, according to the BBC, and definitely worth checking it out. If you’re wary of the breakup songs, however, you should check out the tracks on the album that diverge from that topic — “ballad of a homeschooled girl” is very Weezer and is surprisingly somewhat of an introvert anthem, and “pretty isn’t pretty” is among her best work and discusses beauty standards.

There’s more on the album that also touches on other topics. “lacy” is about envying and adoring someone at the same time (people also suspect it’s about same-sex attraction), “making the bed” is hard to pinpoint but it’s likely about her being aware/regretful of her recklessness as a young adult, “the grudge” could be perceived as a breakup song but has been interpreted to be about Taylor Swift, and “teenage dream” is about making the transition from a teenager to an adult, among other things.

That’s half of the album that covers topics other than a breakup, which is pretty significant. It’s a shame that her singles are all breakup songs because some of these tracks are among the best she’s put out.

The push for GHB when they had just committed to BIR as a proper single was completely ridiculous. Totally agree that was a big problem for both songs, and honestly they should have never pushed both as singles anyways. Pick one (I honestly think they were about tied in hit potential so it didn’t matter which). Love is Embarrassing and Making the Bed should have rounded out the other singles, that’s 4 fairly diverse singles like the debut. For all the Avril comps we’ve made, even Avril never went in on 3 bratty pop-rock singles in a row. She actually did pretty good to avoid ever even having 2 of those in a row. Olivia with 2 albums has already matched the number of “bratty girlll” singles Avril released across 3 albums (Sk8r Boi, Don’t Tell Me, Girlfriend, The Best Damn Thing).

I definitely feel like an old person trying to analyze what "missed" with BIR, GHB, and Obsessed. Like, why aren't the young people interested in streaming her anymore? LOL. That seems to be one of the elements really letting her down this era. But people did stream Vampire, so maybe it is just finding the right song/sound.

I honestly think Bad Idea Right could have been a bigger hit if they hadn’t treated it as a promo single at first. It had a lot of potential and they ruined its momentum by trying to switch to GHB too quickly and then both of them ended up underperforming.

Not sure about Obsessed though… I feel like this was the weakest single choice of the 4 so I guess that’s why.

Radio has definitely been on board with Olivia this era. I mean, streaming has been miserable for the last two songs with little hype and they still sent/are sending them top 10. I forget how Bad Idea Right streamed-better than GHB but oddly enough that missed the top 10.

chr radio has pushed much, much weaker songs (in terms of streaming) than this, and i think people are being dramatic at how bad the streaming is. It's been pretty stable at 480-500k/day US for the last 2 weeks or so.
