Brenda's team is pushing hard. Spotify moved "RATCT" up to first position on the 'Christmas Hits' playlist today. "AIWFCIY" has traditionally been the first song on that playlist. "RATCT" has also been added to the 'teen beats' playlist, which isn't even for holiday music. Brenda Lee's Christmas song is now alongside non-holiday songs by Olivia Rodrigo, Taylor Swift, and Tate McRae lmao.

:ETA: Ling-Ling and Ｓｏｕｎｄｃｌ🕤ｃｋ I can certainly believe the Christmas Hits thing is organic in some way, but surely a holiday song by an elderly lady being added to a playlist of non-holiday songs by younger women is not some organic thing Spotify did.

:ETA2: groovetheory here is where I mention that non-holiday playlist. I just looked and "RATCT" is still on it, but has been moved down to #40.

Well technically "AIWFCIY" has consistently been the most streamed holiday song on Spotify. "RATCT" is often #1 in the U.S., but it's not #1 globally.

Are playlists Global? Or are they based on regional play?

I know this isn't necessarily relevant to current discussion but Rockstar announced the first trailer for GTA 6 drops this Tuesday, we can assume any song they licensed for the trailer is gonna do huge numbers on streaming since it's quite possibly the most anticipated product in entertainment history. So keep watch.

If a group of employees at a streaming service can basically direct streams to one particular song, who’s to say they aren’t receiving an incentive to do so?

I think it would be unquestionable if Brenda was actually competitive at alll streaming platforms, but the fact that she leads in one and Mariah leads in (all?) others, only shows some type of chart manipulation on spotifys end.

I doubt that the people at spotify care too much about the chart positions of Christmas songs. It's not like they're real, organic hits, or their peaks influence how much of a Christmas staple they are

This is actually the more puzzling one for those interested in pursuing manipulation theories. Pandora has a big Christmas playlist that has "RATCT" at positions 1 and 2 on it. Brenda leads Pandora by a wide margin (you can tell because of how she tied "AIWFCIY" last week in overall streams but fell way behind when it came to top tiered streams).

Now let's talk about Apple. "RATCT" now has top placement on the 'Essential Christmas' playlist on Apple (and "AIWFCIY" was pushed down to 3), which is apparently their main holiday playlist. "AIWFCIY" has always been higher on the Apple Music chart than "RATCT," so you can't say Apple did it because of popularity. When you then combine that with the sudden top placement on Spotify and the Pandora thing, it sems to show a clear effort by Brenda's team to increase her streams.

Another interesting Spotify thing is the 1961 re-recorded "RATCT" is now gone, but the overall streams it had have been added to the main "RATCT" (its overall Spotify streams total jumped nearly 100 million streams yesterday). It's smart for her team to get rid of any competing versions that don't count toward the original on the Hot 100, but I don't know why those streams would have been added to the original version.

My assumption is this type of thing has been going on for years with many artists, though, like with the TTH example Ｓｏｕｎｄｃｌ🕤ｃｋ mentions.

They care when Universal is paying them a nice check to move Brenda to the top of all those playlists.

Btw, Apple also moved down Mariah to the #3 position from their main Xmas playlist a few days ago and put Brenda on top of the list. Universal is making their way to each platform.

Pandora doesn’t even have AIWFCIY on their main Xmas playlist and have Branda on top of the list.

Even with all that sabotage, AIWFCIY is still on top globally on both Spotify and Apple. But it’s just the fact that this is going on that makes it fcked up and desperate.

Well I like Focus anyway, which is maybe why I also like My House, but for other reasons as well!

A bit surprised it debuted so low on Spotify and Apple though.
