^Mostly a problem that "All I Want..." now has a genuine challenger to its U.S. holiday dominance, and are laying blame on playlist placement- which has positively impacted 'All I Want..." and most hits throughout the streaming era. They suspect UMG had something to do with the supposed removal of "All I Want.." on Spotify- an unlikely scenario. And even if it were, it sure didn't affect the global streaming/charts. Like I said somewhere else, very "2020 Election Fraud" vibes going on with all that nonsense. "Rockin..." did move down to 3 on Spotify's Christmas Hits playlist- yet it's still had a strong lead Sunday over No .2 on U.S. Spotify, and was 550,000-plus ahead of the No. 2 holiday track yesterday. Thus, apparently, the song is getting streamed whether it's listed first, second, third, or lower. I've seen some mention the song was removed from key playlists for periods of time ranging from hours to several days. And then others questioning it. Which is it? That's what's confusing me. If it was removed, then yeah, that's suspicious, but then from there, why? That can only be speculated. Was it: -the streaming services themselves? -Brenda's team? -Brenda herself asking nicely? -Mariah's team? -Mariah herself wanting to be generous? Beyond that, most of the discussion is around playlist placement, which is also confusing to me. We likely already know placement on a playlist matters. After all, we put emphasis on what's on top or near the top of the Top Hits one, and others. So we know that Mariah's been lucky to be on the top of holiday playlists year after year. I get a sense of entitlement based on the responses when she's not there. With each passing year, AIWFCIY is growing in resentment from people and that could very well be a reason why it's not on top. (mind you, I still feel holiday giddy when I hear those first notes. It is one of if not THE favourite holiday song of mine). Could be an experiment. Could be by request from Brenda's team. In any case, we now see how important placement on streaming playlists can be. If you're mad about this, are you also mad about all the strategic placement of albums and singles in actual record stores throughout history. And then there's the whole thing about passive streaming. Someone mentioned on one of these threads recently about how passive streaming is akin to radio airplay and that people aren't purposely seeking these songs out as much as others. So, do both AIWFCIY and RATCT (and all other holiday songs) rely almost entirely on passive streaming? And does that matter? I guess it all just comes down to intent. How music is placed (whether in radio playlists, stores, or in a streaming playlist) is dependent upon the decisions of a few people - and it's always been that way since time began. These are the people who influence what we the listeners consume. Naturally we want a chart that represents what we consume in a way that it as natural and organic as possible, but that's never really been the case and behind every #1, there's a story of how that song got there and more often than not (or probably even every time), there's something that got that song to the ears of millions of people that many of us would be disappointed in. The chart measures what we as a collective hear. That's all it can be. How those songs get to our ears - you either like it or you don't.
