The 'Christmas Classics' playlist on Spotify is for holiday songs from 1940-1980. It's hugely popular. There is then a 'New Music Holiday' playlist for songs new this season. Is there a playlist specifically for songs from 1980-2020 (or something), though?
Playlists like 'Christmas Pop' and 'Christmas Hits' and 'Classic Christmas Music' have songs across all decades, and I haven't yet found one specifically for holiday music from that 'modern' period.

I LOVE seeing the solidarity Mariah showcased (just like Brenda wished Mariah luck in their little race) while others pit women against eachother typically. Just like the solidarity shown between Beyonce and Taylor. Our queens acting like queens. Now if we can get all these stan groups to be just as supportive. Most of the time they're more invested and worried over chart placements than the artist themselves! lol

Okay but all of that goes so much beyond what the charts are supposed to represent. I know I'm a broken record at this point but all the meaning people are taking from the charts and what records are "supposed to be" or "should" be - none of that matters as far as the charts are concerned. Those are aspects people apply meaning to. The charts are supposed to represent what people are listening to/consuming. That's all. Everything else is extra detail people place to give meaning or context to the chart and it's where the arguing and disagreements come in. You see pure stats and numbers and then you apply context to those - but some people don't like what those numbers represent and they want them removed. Doing that would mean the chart no longer does what it's supposed to. So then what's the purpose anymore?

The charts represent music consumption - end of. Nothing else. If the most consumed music in November and December is Christmas songs, and if those are the same songs people return to year after year, then obviously it makes sense that over time, those would be the songs to break records. "White Christmas" was the best selling single for decades - presumably because people would buy it whenever the holidays rolled around. EVERYONE knows "Rockin Around The Christmas Tree" and "All I Want For Christmas Is You" and "White Christmas". You can't say that for any other song except maybe ones like "Bohemian Rhapsody" and "Imagine" and other time-trendsending classics. If a song holds longevity records and records related to longterm consumption, it makes sense that it be a song that everyone knows and everybody knows the holiday classics.

If nothing else it will happen again in 2026 when Christmas cycles around to be on Friday. I don't think that 1 day (and the decent day on December 26) will be enough to topple a current song that's doing well. It's going to be tough the next few years for a non-holiday song to grab #1 during the week of Christmas because Christmas falls toward the end of the chart week so holiday songs have a lot of days of great streaming.

Where I work a student referred to a book written in 1994 as "a book from the late 1900s" and I nearly fainted. Obviously that's technically true, but man I felt old lmao. To that end "Last Christmas" and "AIWFCIY" are both from 'the late 1900s.'

I think 15 years makes a song a classic, that’s a whole youth generation gone, making it a “parents generation” song for kids.

It's all perspective of course. Here in Florida, you can get a special "Antique" license plate for your car if it's over 30 years old. Tough for me to accept that a vehicle made four years after I graduated high school is "antique", but there you are. (In summary: I'm old, and so is AIWFCIY.)
