yea, if you wanted to listen to Mariah you easily could with one or two clicks. I mean...if you were scrolling playlists and wanted Mariah wouldn't you just go search for one that had her on it? Nobody cares about what playlists are popular. Streams are streams. Besides, Mariah has taken over the transition of Halloween into November and called it her own, so it's not like she isn't promoting, either. With Macauley Caulkin in the news I'm sure has given RAACT a boost.

Yes people can still actively search for Mariah or anyone else, but to act like playlisting (and positions on playlists) isn't a big deal is truly naive at best. Even outside of the holiday season people in these threads talk about what positions songs are on Today's Top Hits because they know a higher positions means increased streams. You yourself have posted on here about using playlists, so let's just be real here. In theory playlisting and positions should at least be based in part on listeners habits, but more so we of course don't want things to be rigged. The reality is "RATCT" suddenly being moved up on playlists on Spotify, Apple, and Amazon at the same time while "AIWFCIY" was lowered (and in some cases removed) is certainly suspicious at best. Additionally there was a huge, sudden discrepancy at Pandora last week where "RATCT" rose something like 2500% in streams and was even songs 1 and 2 on a major playlist. No rational person would think all of that happening within a span of a day or two is a coincidence or organic. It's also telling that throughout the chart week predictions kept showing "RATCT" gaining on "AIWFICY" and then passing it, and that was because all of these playlist changes were happening. musiclife

"RATCT" was going to get to #1 at some point anyway, and it's certainly a great story for Brenda Lee to get a #1 at this point. I don't think anyone denies that, and I look forward to Brenda's reaction. Mariah fans are just upset that it happened in what appears to be a very rigged manner.

So Mariah is supposed to be at the top of playlists forever until the end of eternity and if they dare consider to move her down a spot they’re working to rig the charts against her lol?

Hell, pointing out that Mariah has previously always been atop these playlists for every single year consecutively until now sounds like any “rigging” that occurred has been in her favor lmao.

At the end of a day playlist placement is a privilege not a right. Unless they just removed her completely from every playlist and blacklisted her I don’t see how you can argue they’re working against her or conspiring something.

It's hard to really know. Even before the streaming era if someone told me to make a Christmas playlist for the public it would've probably been my first choice. I think there was a movie which gave it a big boost in popularity in the early 00's and it's been a staple ever since. But yes, there very well may have been label imvolvement to get her at the top of a lot of playlists, we can't really know how much it's down to its popularity and how much it's down to promotion.

I'm really pleased Brenda might get #1 though. It would've been really boring if Mariah got it every week for the rest of our lives lol. It looks like her team went a bit overboard with the promotion though, she's 14 points ahead in the predictions now. Maybe from their perspective they're going all out because they've probably put a lot of effort and money into promotion the past couple of weeks so they don't want it to go to waste. I'm sure Mariah can be #1 again in the future, either later this month or in a future year.

It would be great for other Christmas songs to get to #1 but the rest seem to be way too far behind. There was always a chance for Brenda because she was only a few points behind Mariah in 2021 and 2022. But a 40+ point gap is quite a lot for the other songs to make up. Maybe some can gradually close the gaps in coming years, that's what happened to Last Christmas in the UK.

Wait, so what's happened that's gotten everyone so riled up? Brenda's song was moved up on streaming service's holiday playlists? Or Mariah's song was temporarily removed from said playlists? The second one is fishy for sure. The first one - not sure why that's an issue. Songs rotate and move around on playlists all the time and seemingly isn't based on anything other than the whims of the respective services.

If we look at it like a physical store, you might say that songs placed near the top of the playlist are akin to albums/singles placed at the front of a record store. Those are the ones the retailer is predicting people will buy (or the placement that labels are requesting/buying, since I'm pretty sure companies can request specific placement of their products on shelves in stores). I also assume they can't request competitive products NOT be sold in the same stores (though that's probably wrong too from what I've heard about the available of bread in certain stores depending on location but I digress). So I guess it kind of depends on what the situation really is and who's behind it. If it's the outlet (Spotify, Pandora, whatever) removing the song, then it's on them and unfortunately fair game even if it sucks (and probably wouldn't be unlike Amazon deciding to sell Born This Way for 99 cents). If it's Brenda's people requesting they pull Mariah from the playlist, then yeah, that's definitely reason for side-eye.

They did both. They moved Mariah’s song down on every major Xmas playlist and they also removed it from playlists last week and added back (on a more lower placement mind you) when the cut off period ended.
