Screaming that we're witnessing in real-time Sabrina Carpenter having one of the biggest hits of the decade with a mid-tempo ABBA country song. It really goes to show how powerful riding a moment is. Just one of those struck gold times.

Yeah this took a second to grow on me but now I'm obsessed. Really hoping it can get the Hot 100 #1.

Just one of those struck gold times. Obviously momentum is helping her, but I think a lot of people are discounting just what an absolutely well written, produced and performed pop song this is. Many artists have momentum and their next released song is not a guaranteed hit. Even pop stars at their peak releasing their first single off a new hyped era can have an underperforming single.

I do really like the song but it's 100% riding the momentum of Espresso.

Initially? Sure, but it's clearly caught on in a big way since.

I do really like the song but it's 100% riding the momentum of Espresso. I'ma disagree. This is just as good, if not slightly better than "Espresso" IMO. That chorus is anthemic.

^ I agree it’s better, my point isn’t about quality. Initially? Sure, but it's clearly caught on in a big way since. Ok yes, fair comment - I guess what I mean is the success of Espresso is what made this big out of the gate. I don’t think it would have had that chance on its own.

Happy to see it finally gaining traction on radio! Pop at least. Hope that helps the 2nd week on hot 100!

I do really like the song but it's 100% riding the momentum of Espresso. I agree. When I first heard the song I didn't think much of it. I think the verses are awful and chorus is bearable. I went on TikTok and see women with low self esteem using the sound to beg their long-term boyfriends to marry them OR asking their partners not to humiliate them

No one is denying that she has momentum coming off "Espresso." But come on guys, this song is clearly smashing on its own merit at this point. You'd think on a music board where we are (mostly) all well versed in the industry we should know that. Compare this to Olivia Rodrigo's second single. Or even the hyped first singles from Ariana and Taylor. This is holding up better than all of them. "Espresso" is a hit, but it's not an all-powerful follow-up single smash booster.
I've noticed when a lot of people first hear this song, they don't get it or even hate it. Then I'll see many posts saying how it grew on them. Think it has to do with the weird song structure, random key change, and 70's style production, so people write it off immediately. But it's definitely a smash hit and I loved it the first time I heard it. I haven't had a song on repeat like this since I can even remember.

Yes….the success of previous singles, particularly for new artists, has a tremendous impact on the success of sequential singles… How is this even a topic of conversation? P=mv

Hahahaha oh my lord, such carnage I have caused. My original comment was actually just highlighting what a great moment she's having so pretending that was the last of it. Peace and love.

Not sure if 4.4M is enough to get the #1 on the Hot 100, but hopefully it can hold I Had Some Help off.

What i am really curious about is: where do we think she would be, career/performance-wise without The Eras tour? Obviously she had a bit of a moment with nonsense and feathers (but im sure both got a boost and/or a second life because of the tour coverage), but would Espresso be the that big of a hit? I would love to see a breakdown of new listeners, and retention rate, from the time between the start of the tour and the release of espresso.

No way to know for sure but I feel like if she had still gotten Coachella she would be more or less doing the same. Feather was big and had legs and Espresso just built on top of that.
Not sure if PPP would exist though because I believe she met Jack through Taylor.

Espresso would've been a huge hit with or without The Eras Tour, it's just too catchy to ignore.

#2 in it's second week on Billboard's Tik Tok chart . it is interesting that Espresso so far only peaked at #17 there and has dropped since.

Espresso would've been a huge hit with or without The Eras Tour, it's just too catchy to ignore. While "Espresso" is undeniably catchy, I don't think it would have become a huge hit without opening on the Eras Tour. You can have the best song in the world, but if it doesn't reach a wide audience or gain momentum while the label has the budget allocated for promo…good luck! Lol This song is an incredible earworm—the best pure pop I've heard in a while. By performing it in front of 72,500 people a night on the Eras Tour, she won the lottery in terms of stages to showcase its potential. It's also interesting to note that she has released more albums than veterans like Katy Perry and isn't a new artist, which further gives credit to how significant the timing and Era’s tour exposure has been for her.

Not saying Espresso would've been a smash out of the gate like it was, but it'd eventually find a way to become one. Taylor and her tour really helped her, there's no denying, but Espresso is just THAT song, and Sabrina wasn't unknown before the tour.

Climbs to #1 in Australia, maybe the first place she's achieved multiple chart-toppers? Nope, Ireland beat us to the punch 'cause PPP debuted at #1 there. And also she replaced herself at the top which is some true chart slayage.

The Eras Tour wasn't very impactful on her listener base, especially in the US (where she was NOT the opening act last year). No way to know for sure but I feel like if she had still gotten Coachella she would be more or less doing the same. Feather was big and had legs and Espresso just built on top of that. I don't believe in coincidences. So when I see that Sabrina has been an active recording artist for a decade and flopping that entire time - then two months after supporting the biggest tour in history, is now breaking streaming records and racking up #1 singles - I'm inclined to believe those two events are strongly correlated.
It's not just the new fans she gained from the Eras Tour. Sabrina's proximity to Taylor and association with the biggest artist on the planet elevated her status. It's made radio stations more likely to spin her new music right off the bat, and she's given automatic top placement on streaming playlists. I think it's also made her label willing to spend more money on promoting her, because now there are huge potential returns.
