You answered your own question right there. Yes it was an extremely rare occurrence, probably the only time it's happened (when the Country chart was solely airplay-based), but if anyone would do it, it would be not only one of the biggest stars in the history of the format, but the single biggest and most commercially successful artist in the history of the format up to that time. Plus, I do think it was actually a pretty good song, maybe not one of his absolute best, but certainly not among his worst. Interestingly, it went on to actually be a pretty big country hit, dropping to #8 the week after it debuted, but staying in the top 10 for a total of 15 weeks and slowly climbing back to #2.

perhaps akin to how in recent years Lift Me Up debuted #6 on the radio and peaked #2 h100.

Isn't part of the difference because people pay for Spotify? That is different than radio you don't pay for. Of course, there are also free accounts. I don't know how easy it is to detect when someone who listens via a free Spotify account then listens to a song via Autoplay.

There is still so much nuance to it regardless. For example I've gone to a specific artist to hear a specific song, and then of course it plays the next song from that album next. I might let it play if I'm busy, but it's passive in that I didn't intend to listen to that song.

There is no difference between a programmed stream and an autoplayed stream (or even a playlist stream), but the latter probably pays way more, and the Hot 100 is revenue-reflective. But they never weighed discounted sales less either. The formula is the best it's ever been (imo) but still remains imperfect.

Total First Week Streams for Luke Combs - Father & Sons [4/12]: 12,901,831

Well we've finally got a calmer week than usual. Sabrina rules over all again as Please Please Please stays on top for the second week in a row, actually being up from last week by 7.22% It easily beat Espresso which fall back 14.57% in streams. The same goes for BIRDS OF A FEATHER which stayed at #3 despite a 19.73% decrease from last week. Likewise, I Had Some Help stabilized at #4 with a 13.45% drop in streams. Then entering the Top 10 after weeks of momentum building, Good Luck Babe! rises to #8 with an 8.15% increase in streams.

Ain't No Love in Oklahoma shockingly fell by 38.44% while Close to You fell to 18.91% though the latter will comfortably bounce back next week. Houdini also falls out of the Top 10 after a szieable 30.66% drop. HIT ME HARD AND SOFT finally saw another big drop on week 5 with 26.1% drop.

In gains and debuts, we saw the biggest weekly album debuts for both Don Toliver and $uicideboy$ albeit none were the biggest debut. That went to Tommy Richman's follow-up single to MILLION DOLLAR BABY: DEVIL IS A LIE which rose throughout the week as a sort of sleeperhit. Luke Combs surprisingly only debuted 3 songs with 4 songs in total adding up to 12.9M. But the new albums from Don and Luke did boost BANDIT and The Man He Sees in Me. All of Chappell Roan's songs continued their upward trajectory, all reaching new peaks in streams and chart positions. High Road was also up from last and week and finally the boy is mine also increased with the looming Brandy-Monica Remix just around the corner.

"Please Please Please" keeps 2024's streak going of at least one new number one song each month, as it just squeaks in for the week ending June 29th. The last time we had at least one new number one song each month in a calendar year was way back in 2006. That's the only time it's happened since the advent of SoundScan in 1991.

It probably won't last the whole year but at least we got halfway there!

I bet a lot of people would also get even Taylor and Elton wrong. Chuck Berry's only number one was famously the raunchy novelty hit "My Ding-a-Ling." Sometimes you get obvious ones like with the Beatles, the Rolling Stones, and Madonna, but a surprisingly high number of even the biggest acts would have first number ones that in retrospect aren't the most obvious choices.
