So thanks to Clear Channel's new "Premium Choice" programming initiative, it seems like many of the Clear Channel "Kiss" CHRs are using the same playlist overnight weekends.
Look at WAKS, WKST, WKKF, WKFS, WFMF, WSNX, WZKF music logs from last night using yes.com. I used 1AM as the sample hour but it's probably the same for other others also.
Chart-wise, this means that the playlists of the individual stations don't matter during these times, and any song that gets on the Clear Channel national playlist automatically gets 7 extra spins. It's kind of like the chart impact of AT40 or Open House Party.
There may also be other stations using the national playlist at this time that I missed.

This explains the horrible weekend most songs had. It's just a shame that it has turned to this. Radio might be on its last legs.

^Wow Cumulus was gettin all that flack for "centralized programming" (adding the same artists at the same time, etc.)...this makes Cumulus look a lot better IMO
Those are all teen/rhythmic CHRs so guessin their overnight playlist is gonna lean that way...WAKS, WKST, WKKF, and WKFS have pretty mediocre ratings so this might be a way to save $$$ IMO (WKKF/Albany fell to 1.7 rating last quarter)

So if this continues then we're going to truly get a half-and-half chart. The upper half with a gigantic amount of spins, the lower half with a piddly amount of spins. And it'll be difficult for new artists or singles that aren't pushed to death by their label to break the barrier between the two halves. We truly will have 20 songs that are played to death on CHR, further causing radio to turn into crap.
I can't believe I'm saying this, but radio was better before payola was illegal.

So if this continues then we're going to truly get a half-and-half chart. The upper half with a gigantic amount of spins, the lower half with a piddly amount of spins. If this is continuous programming w/o commercials, D. J.'s., etc., it's gonna be a ridiculous boost to teen-based songs (even those in the lower half of the chart) and a ridiculous setback to rock/Hot AC tracks that aren't in the Top 5 IMO Mediabase should cap off spins over 100x a week, cause teen stations that spins their powers 140-150x a week are basically controlling the chart (artificially) And these are stations with pretty much medium-low ratings, and even lower ratings overnight >:(

This is probably related to cutbacks. I don't think it'll be THAT bad.

Yeah it's only a few stations, I don't think it'll change the chart all that much, and I don't think it's permanent.

This is probably related to cutbacks. I don't think it'll be THAT bad. It's not just this. It's everything that's happening with CC, including the consolidation of jobs. Even before stations started sharing playlists, earlier this year CC assigned single PDs to multiple stations, meaning a lot less variety based on where you live than there was before. Plus, you've got more and more stations firing local DJs and airing syndicated programming like Seacrest or Kid Kraddick. That takes away a huge chunk of individualized programming right there. And that problem isn't limited to CC stations. Radio is dying qualitatively, which isn't a surprise. It's working under a terribly inefficient business model. The advertisers are the clients for these stations, not the people who listen to radio. So everything they do is to appease advertisers-they could give a crap what listeners want to hear. As long as the songs don't suck so much that people change the station, a CHR will put out the cheapest programming it can find. Usually that means syndicated programming and less DJs. It's not about what's good, it's about what's the least risky. That's probably why Poker Face is getting a ridiculous amount of spins right now. It seems to work; people aren't changing the station when it's on, and dancy music is in. So they play the crap out of it rather than adding more variety to the playlist. Doesn't mean that most people would actually pick Poker Face as their favorite song.

^Agreed but IMO the reason Poker Face is gettin so many spins is cause teen stations are spinnin it 120-150x a week...and those spins add up - most people listen to those stations an average of an hour a day, so not sure it's really a bigger #1 than most others (unless it stays there a long time IMO)
Rurry said he didn't think this was permanent though, which could be really good point IMO (if it's true)
Thing is though Clear Channel went all out with teen/rhythmic stations in the early 2000s and over the past few years has seen most of its self-created stations suffer in ratings...IMO it's kinda a classic example of the reason we're in a recession right now (i. e. goin all out on an idea, and eventually gettin short on listeners)

Not just overnights evidently- WDKF and WKKF have the exact same programming right now at 9PM on a weeknight, although WKKF is a little behind time-wise. Same songs in the same order, with the same generic voicetracks in between. (The voicetracks don't mention a station name or local city at all.) According to yes.com, WZKF is running the same playlist.
So assuming this continues through the overnights, that's 10 hours a day these 3 reporters are basically just simulcasting each other.
At least the other stations that were doing it early Monday morning are doing their own thing on weeknights.

Well, this is already killing off most of the newer AC/Hot AC crossovers: "Second Chance" is -46 so far this week, "Please Don't Leave Me" is -40, David Cook's "Come Back To Me" is -48, plus "That's Not My Name", "America's Suiteharts", "Kristy, Are You Doing Okay?" are all in the negative, with "If Today Was Your Last Day", "1, 2, 3, 4", "Wanted", and "The Wind Blows" about to lose them.
According to my stats, about 20-22 stations are currently running this Clear Channel Overnight program, with some running it 8PM-6AM, some 10PM-6AM and some 12AM-6AM.

Would it be possible to please list the stations in question doing this? It would be interesting to see whether this is happening in some major markets. But clearly, this is not a good direction for CHR, assuming that this is going on for 7 days a week.

I know one top-10 market, WXKS-FM (Kiss 108) in Boston is airing it from what looks like 10PM-6AM while Joey "JoJo" Brooks Joey "JoJo" Wright is voicetracked out of Q102 in Pennsylvania 102.7 KIIS-FM in Los Angeles.

Does everyone just want to check their hometown CC CHR? Here's the list for 2AM last night: Black Eyed Peas - Boom Boom Pow Kanye West - Stronger Ashanti - Foolish Ne-Yo - Mad Cassie - Me & U The Fray - You Found Me Justin Timberlake - Rock Your Body Kelly Clarkson - My Life Would Suck Without You Nicola Fasano vs. Pat Rich - 75 Brazil Street (I think this should be "I Know You Want Me (Calle Ocho)" and yes.com just has its song tags mixed up slightly.) Kevin Rudolf - Welcome To The World (w/ Rick Ross) Beyonce - Halo Jesse McCartney - How Do You Sleep? Lady Gaga - Just Dance (w/ Colby O'Donis & Akon) Ray J - Sexy Can I (w/ Yung Berg) Leona Lewis - Better In Time
Yes.com confirms WXKS has this list.
Yes.com also confirms WHTZ, WIOQ, and WKQI are NOT part of this.

That song should be erased from all automated station playlists.

This is the (almost) full list of Clear Channel CHRs that are using national playlists. All times listed are local time (i.e. Eastern time for stations in Eastern Time Zone, Central for stations in Central time Zone, etc.). These schedules are for weekdays/weeknights; schedules may be different on the weekend:
WHTZ - no KIIS - no WKSC - 2AM-5AM KHKS - no WIOQ - 12AM-6AM WIHT - no WKQI - no WXKS - 10PM-6AM WHYI - 10PM-5AM KZZP - 12AM-5AM KDWB - no KHTS - no WFLZ - no KSLZ - 12AM-5AM WKST - 12AM-5AM KKRZ - 10PM-5AM WAKS - 12AM-6AM WKFS - 12AM-6AM KXXM - 12AM-5AM KZHT - no WNCI - no WXXL - no KHFI - 12AM-5AM WDCG - no WRVW - no WLDI - 2AM-6AM WFKS - 12AM-6AM WKSS - 1AM-5AM KJYO - no WRVQ - 12AM-6AM* WQEN - no KRQQ - 12AM-5AM WSNX - 12AM-5AM WAEB - no WWHT - no WHKF - 12AM-5AM WFMF - 12AM-5AM WVKS - 12AM-5AM WNOK - 12AM-6AM KKDM - 12AM-5AM KZCH - 12AM-6AM WZEE - no WKCI - 1AM-5AM KSAS - no WLAN - no WERZ - no WJJS - no WAKZ - 12AM-5:30AM KSME - no KRUF - no WAEV - 12AM-6AM
These stations were removed from the Mediabase panel because they are doing the national playlist 20 hours a day, from 10AM-6AM:
WKGS WZKF WDKF WKKF WLKT
Some of the stations, WIOQ I noticed in particular, add a couple of songs at the bottom of the hour. I guess some stations have fewer commercials than others, or speed up the music more than others, and have to add a song or two.
* WRVQ follows about 2/3 of the national playlist but subs in 1/3 of their own songs. I guess this is similar to when stations sub their own songs into AT40.

Seems like this is affecting more the eastern markets. Hopefully those are the only stations and that list doesn't grow further.

Wait, so I've read this soooo many times but can someone try to please explain this in as simple of a way as possible? :) It would be greatly appreciated I'm pretty sure that it's a bunch of stations that are all airing the same playlists overnight, so any songs that aren't on this centrilized overnight playlist are getting screwed, losing a huge amount of spins and bullet because they're not getting spun overnights on several stations anymore. That's why songs like Please Don't Leave Me, Second Chance, The Climb & Waking Up in Vegas have all plummeted the past few days.

Just more chart manipulation from the Empire I was gonna say... how long until we're getting a chart 100% tailored by CC? Amazing.
