Exactly. She's peaked on pop, is going to peak on hac soon as well. Airplay will start to fall. Sales didn't even go up that much with the discount.

I think Katy's chance at #1 is over. It's either Lights or Whistle getting it next b/c Lights is still holding steady/gaining in streaming and airplay, and Whistle is gaining in streaming, airplay, and sales. Carly Rae is still hanging on by virtue of having had such a big lead for so long that it's taking a while for her drop to fall below anyone else.
Poor Payphone, all that time so close and yet it just never could quite scratch its way to the top.

i remember a few BB threads back, someone talking about a record for longest time the top spot of charts been held by a foreign act or something like that. We're at 18 weeks now, how close are they to breaking the record?

We're at 18 weeks now, how close are they to breaking the record? Can't answer, but the record (I think) was about artists with their first Hot 100 entry at #1 in a row. Which is 3 right now, maybe 4 if Lights makes it. Not sure how many weeks is the record. But they all have been non-American so someone might have mentioned a record about longest time without an American at #1 as well.

Week Ending Aug. 5, 2012. Songs: Phillip Phillips Is “Home”

Phillip Phillips' "Home" rebounds from #84 to #9 in its sixth week on the Hot 100. This represents a new peak for the song, which debuted at #10 in May. The song received a big boost from NBC's Olympics coverage. It was used as the backdrop to women's gymnastics, which always draws high ratings. "Home" leaps from #47 to #1 on Hot Digital Songs (which measures only sales, whereas the Hot 100 also factors in radio airplay and on-demand streaming activity.) This marks the first time than an American Idol champ has had the best-selling song in the U.S. in the year of his or her coronation since David Cook's "The Time Of My Life" debuted at #1 in May 2008, right after his victory. "Home" sold 228K copies this week, which brings its total sales to date to 844K. It's the best-selling coronation song by an Idol champ since "The Time Of My Life," which has sold 1,459,000 copies. ("Home" just this week surged past Scotty McCreery's "I Love You This Big," which has sold 839K copies.) One other Idol champ has had a #1 hit on Hot Digital Songs, but not in his or her year of coronation. Kelly Clarkson topped the digital chart for two weeks earlier this year with "Stronger (What Doesn't Kill You)." Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" is #1 on the Hot 100 for the ninth straight week. It's the longest-running #1 of 2012, surpassing "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra, which had eight weeks on top. This marks the first time that a hit by a Canadian artist has logged nine weeks at #1 since Percy Faith's "The Theme From `A Summer Place'" achieved the feat in 1960. That shimmering instrumental won the Grammy for Record of the Year. This marks the first time that a strictly solo recording by a female artist (no collabos) has logged nine weeks at #1 since Ke$ha's "TiK ToK" did it in early 2010. "Call Me Maybe" tops the 5 million mark in its 24th week. Only one other song in digital history has reached 5 million this quickly. That's "Somebody That I Used To Know," which reached 5 million in 23 weeks. (The old record for a song by a female solo artist was Adele's "Rolling In The Deep," which hit 5 million in 35 weeks.) "Call Me Maybe" is the third song to top the 5 million mark in 2012 sales. It follows "Somebody That I Used To Know" (which this week tops 6 million in 2012 sales) and "We Are Young" by fun. featuring Janelle Monae. Before this year, no song had sold 5 million copies in a calendar year. And here it's only August and we already have three for this year. Ellie Goulding's "Lights" jumps from #5 to #2 (a new peak) in its 33rd week on the chart. It has a good chance of hitting #1 next week. Its main competitor appears to be Flo Rida's "Whistle," which jumps from #4 to #3 in its 12th week. Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" drops from #2 to #4. Barring a turnaround, it will become her first single to peak at #2. Perry has amassed seven #1 hits on the Hot 100, from 2008's "I Kissed A Girl" to this year's "Part Of Me," but until now had never stalled in the runner-up spot. Of the 18 artists who have amassed seven or more #1 hits since 1955, only one act never had a #2 record. Bee Gees had nine #1 hits from 1971's "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart" to 1979's "Love You Inside Out," and never once peaked at #2. For them, coming that close only to fall short would have been a "Tragedy." (Sorry.) You probably know by now that Bee Gees are back in the top 10 on The Billboard 200. Their Number Ones compilation re-enters the chart at #5 due to a 99-cent sale at Amazon MP3. "Payphone" by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa drops from #3 to #5 in its 16th week. This is the first time the song hasn't ranked in the top three. The smash may be just six weeks away from becoming the first song in Hot 100 history to spend its first 22 weeks in the top 10. It would break a record set just last month by Nicki Minaj's "Starships," which spent its first 21 weeks in the top 10. Stay tuned. Here's the low-down on this week's top 10 songs. The Top Five: Carly Rae Jepsen's "Call Me Maybe" holds at #1 for the ninth week in its 24th week on the chart. This is its 19th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #3 (166K)… Ellie Goulding's "Lights" jumps from #5 to #2 (a new peak) in its 33rd week on the chart. This is its seventh week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #8 (120K)… Flo Rida's "Whistle" jumps from #4 to #3 (a new peak) in its 12th week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #2 (222K)…Katy Perry's "Wide Awake" drops from #2 to #4 in its 11th week on the chart. This is its ninth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #5 (130K)…"Payphone" by Maroon 5 featuring Wiz Khalifa drops from #3 to #5 its 16th week on the chart. It has been in the top five the entire time. Digital sales rank: #11 (106K). The Second Five: "Somebody That I Used To Know" by Gotye featuring Kimbra holds at #6 for the second week in its 31st week on the chart. This is its 23rd week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #15 (82K)…Rihanna's "Where Have You Been" holds at #7 for the third week in its 16th week on the chart. This is its 10th week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #26 (54K)..."Titanium" by David Guetta featuring Sia holds at #8 for the fourth week in its 17th week on the chart. This is its sixth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #13 (90K)… Phillip Phillips' "Home" rebounds from #84 to #9 in its sixth week on the chart. This is its second week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #1 (228K)… P!nk's "Blow Me (One Last Kiss)" holds at #10 for the third week in its fifth week on the chart. This is its fourth week in the top 10. Digital sales rank: #10 (118K). Usher's "Scream" drops from #9 to #12, ending a six-week run in the top 10. .fun's "Some Nights" holds at #11 for the second week in its 24th week. Digital sales rank: #4 (139K)…Cher Lloyd's "Want U Back" dips from #12 to #13 in its eighth week. Digital sales rank: #6 (122K)..."Good Time" by Owl City & Carly Rae Jepsen dips from #13 to #14 in its sixth week. Digital sales rank: #9 (118K). "Good Time" has ranked in the top 10 on Hot Digital Songs for five weeks, "Want U Back" for four and "Some Nights" for three. Radio airplay has yet to catch up to digital sales on these three titles. But there's still time. "As Long As You Love Me" by Justin Bieber featuring Wiz Khalifa jumps from #28 to #15 in its seventh week. The smartly-designed record is Bieber's 10th top 20 hit. It's likely to become his third top five hit. Digital sales rank: #7 (122K)…Demi Lovato's "Give Your Heart A Break" holds at #18 in its 18th week. The song tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week…Alex Clare's "Too Close" jumps from #30 to #24 in its 19th week. This song also tops the 1 million mark in digital sales this week. Maroon 5's "One More Night" vaults from #54 to #30 (a new high) in its seventh week. This gives the group two songs in the top 30. Will they have two in the top 20 or (maybe even the top 10) in a few weeks? Place your bets…The two biggest stars to emerge from American Idol both have fast-rising hits. Kelly Clarkson's "Dark Side" jumps from #49 to #44 in its seventh week…Carrie Underwood's "Blown Away" leaps from #72 to #47 in its fifth week. Nicki Minaj's "Pound The Alarm" vaults from #92 to #50 in its second week. It's the third top 50 hit from Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded, following "Starships" (#5) and "Beez In The Trap" (featuring 2 Chainz, #48)…Matchbox Twenty's "She's So Mean" jumps from #70 to #63 in its sixth week. Will it match the #26 peak of the Rolling Stones' 1980 hit "She's So Cold"? Stay tuned…Train's "50 Ways To Say Goodbye" jumps from #83 to #71 in its fourth week…"Pop That" by French Montana featuring Rick Ross, Drake, Lil Wayne jumps from #86 to #78 in its fourth week. That's some high-powered assistance. "New Day" by 50 Cent featuring Dr. Dre and Alicia Keys is the week's top new entry at #79. It's from 50's fifth studio album, Street King Immortal, which is due Nov. 5… Miguel's "Adorn" debuts at #82. It's from his second studio album, Kaleidoscope Dream, which is due Oct. 2…Miranda Lambert's "Fastest Girl In Town" jumps from #94 to #85 in its second week…Rascal Flatts' "Come Wake Me Up" jumps from #98 to #87 in its second week. "Diced Pineapples" by Rick Ross featuring Drake & Wale debuts at #89. It's from Ross' God Forgives, I Don't, which enters The Billboard 200 at #1 this week…Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" debuts at #93. It's from the band's EP Continued Silence. The song was featured in an ad for an upcoming NBC series during the network's Olympics coverage…"Enough Of No Love" by Keyshia Cole featuring Lil Wayne debuts at #94. It's from Cole's upcoming fifth studio album, Woman To Woman…Ne-Yo's "Let Me Love You" debuts at #99. It's from his fifth studio album, R.E.D., which is due in December… Kendrick Lamar's "Swimming Pools (Drank)" debuts at #100. It's from his upcoming debut album, Good Kid, Mad City. "Glamorous" by Fergie featuring Ludacris tops the 3 million mark in digital sales this week. It's the third song from Fergie's smash 2006 album The Dutchess to hit this mark. It follows "Big Girls Don't Cry" (3,833,000) and "Fergalicious" (featuring will.i.am, 3,063,000). This is the fifth 3-million seller as a featured artist for Ludacris. It follows Taio Cruz's "Break Your Heart" (3,712,000), Justin Bieber's "Baby" (3,685,000), Usher's "Yeah!" (which also featured Lil Jon, 3,575,000) and Enrique Iglesias' "Tonight (I'm Lovin' You)" (3,068,000). Alas, Ludacris has yet to land a 3-million-seller as a lead artist. His top-seller with himself in the lead position is "How Low" (2,216,000). Taylor Swift's "Our Song" also tops the 3 million mark in digital sales. It's the third country song to reach this mark. Swift has three of them. No other country artist has more than one. Swift's other songs at or above this plateau are "Love Story" (5,375,000) and "You Belong With Me" (4,110,000).

fun. Oh they're not foreign oops.
But those 3 were #1s with their first song on the Hot 100, in a row.
But I don't know what record you are talking about then...

fun. Oh they're not foreign oops. But those 3 were #1s with their first song on the Hot 100, in a row. But I don't know what record you are talking about then... Found it. Guess it was broken this week So, between Carly, Gotye and Kimbra, that's 14 weeks so far that no American has been at #1. There are three four similar 14 week strings that I know of: - In 1964, The Beatles had 14 consecutive weeks at #1 on their own between their hits.
- In 1978, between Andy Gibb and his brothers, they also managed to reach 14 straight weeks at #1.
- The summer of 1985 has the most impressive streak because it required 8 different songs by 7 different non-American artists to reach 14 weeks.
- In 1996, Macarena was #1 for 14 weeks.
The only longer streak of which I'm aware is when Elton John's CITW had a 14 week streak on it's own, and was then toppled by Savage Garden for 2 weeks.I don't know if there are any other comparable streaks. We came close earlier this year, but LMFAO's SAIKI interrupted Rihanna's chart run. I don't think Ellie has a good chance of beating Katy to #1 this week (if Ellie even ever gets to #1), but it would be interesting if it could to make that streak longer. Or Carly could hold on for more weeks. Edit: I forgot about Los Del Rio, or more likely, I have tried to permanently remove that song from my memory.

Funny that today Ellie Goulding will climb to #2 on the US charts, while debuting the lead single from her second album in the UK just a couple of hours afterward.

Are we back to the days where songs hold on to the #1 forever? Will there be no more than 9 or 10 chart-toppers a year? I hope not!

Of course, they don't give half of the actual figures when I want to use them. The airplay is based on last weeks figures and the increase/decreases we got this week, while the On-Demand Streaming is incredibly rounded, I don't know the trends there, but: Lights : 120k sales, 114.5 AI, 900k ODS Wide Awake : 130k sales, 116.6 AI, 550k ODS Whistle : 226k sales, 60 AI, 650k ODS Call Me Maybe : 166k sales, 104 AI, 900k ODS If this theoretical formula (100M AI = 100k/0.65 sales = 100k/0.05 ODS) is correct, then the points would be: Call Me Maybe = 166 * 0.65 + 104 + 900 * 0.05 = 256.9Lights = 120 * 0.65 + 114.5 + 900 * 0.05 = 237.5Whistle = 226 * 0.65 + 60 + 650 * 0.05 = 239.4Wide Awake = 130 * 0.65 + 116.6 + 550 * 0.05 = 228.6It seems legit. If it's correct, then streaming only counts for around 15-20% of overall chart points. Thanks for posting this. I have been trying to estimate the chart points for the past few weeks using the following assumptions: Sales = 1 point for every 15 downloads (used to be 1:10, and before August, 11, 2007, 1:5, so I am guessing Billboard kept the same pattern). Airplay = 1 point for every 10,000 audience impressions (no change) On-Demand Songs = 1 point for every 250 on-demand streams (Billboard indicated that on demand streaming would be weighted double the passive streaming, passive streaming was 1 point for every 500 streams). Using those ratios I came up with: Call Me Maybe = 25,067 points (previous week 26,093) Lights = 23,050 points (previous week 22,425) Billboard does not publish passive streaming #s so that is one piece of data that is missing. You are pretty much correct. (0.65 multiplier I use for sales is pretty close to 1/15 sales vs 1/10 Airplay). But we have different ratios for streaming. Let's use this case. On PAYPHONE debut week, it ranked lower than WE ARE YOUNG. Using your method WAY: 251k sales + 136M Airplay + 1150k streaming = 34933 Payphone: 493k sales + 36M Airplay + 0 streaming (didn't chart) = 36466 So that doesn't explain it. I think the passive streaming might be the answer, but since we have no numbers or charts for it, we can only assume that it is proportional to on-demand and incorporate it by increasing on-demands weightage. For example, if we use On-Demand Songs = 1 point for every 200 on-demand streams Those points become: WAY: 36083 Payphone: 36466 Which is acceptable with around 1% error. A slightly lower sales weightage or slightly higher streaming weightage will boost WAY points above Payphone.

"Call Me Maybe," #1 for a 9th week?!? And a 10th week is possible? Ok, it's official, the chart moves wayyyyyy too slow now. So it wasn't slow when BEP ruled half a year? There's nothing wrong with charts reflecting the reality. If people download and listen to the same songs for months then be it. Why should charts indicate otherwise?

Something's wrong with that though, according to that formula, Whistle is ahead of Lights. We don't know the actual streaming or airplay data, his numbers were guesses which he plugged into the formula The airplay data should be pretty accurate, considering we got the numbers last week, and the increases for this week. For Katy I just multiplied the mediabase numbers by 0.75, the streaming though could be off by as much as 100k, which would explain why Ellie is slightly behind Flo Rida. Actual streaming probably counts for 10-15 points too, but then again neither Flo nor Ellie are on the BB Youtube Top 25 (if that's what that chart is anyway).

A slightly lower sales weightage or slightly higher streaming weightage will boost WAY points above Payphone. When I was doing my analysis trying to figure out the new weightings BB is using, I picked 2 charts, April 14th and May 5th, because they gave the most surprising results (songs with very large sales #s that did not reach as high as one would expect). The on demand ratio of 250:1 explains the April 14th results well (We Are Young edges out Boyfriend by 587 points), but has trouble with the May 5th chart (I come up with a difference of 2,274 points in favour of Payphone, since I have 210,000 on-demand streams for Payphone). Therefore, We Are Young would need 1.137M passive streams to make up the difference, assuming BB has not changed the passive streaming ratio of 500:1. It is fun to speculate, but frankly I think BB makes it unduly complicated (and I wish they would stop changing the point system part way through a chart year, it skews the year-end results). I use my own simple version of sales 1:1, on-demand 1:10, and airplay 1:1000. It gives different results, but I prefer it since it gives more weight to sales.

Flawless. Our Song deserves it so much. <3 I'm so confused. If "Our Song" is the third country song to sell 3 mill, and Taylor has three over 3 mill, then what genre are "Before He Cheats" and "Need You Now"?
