Chart Notes:

• I'll start my top 40 today! SO be on the lookout for another tag
• Lady Gaga has managed to have at least one song make the top 10 every year since 2008. 2015 looked like it would be a sadly Gaga-less year, but then her duet with Tony started popping up on tv and she was looking flawless!
• Stevie Wonder hasn't had a top ten hit on the Billboard Hot 100 in about three decades, but on the Bonanza, he manages to get his first ever. Merry Christmas, Stevie!
  

I decided to skip a couple boring years (Christmas-wise) to move up to 2003, when the Blind Boys of Alabama hit #1 with this soul-filled Christmas song. They remain the oldest act to have hit #1 on my chart. I think they were all in their 70s at the time. Tony Bennett could break that record this year - will he? Also Outkast was otherwise killing it. The Way You Move, actually hit #1 first in November. And then Hey Ya! knocked the Christmas song off its perch to start off 2004.

#40 - Firestone - Kygo ft. Conrad	Feb. 21 - #3 (2 weeks)
I'm a flame. You're a fire. Firestone made its debute right at the beginning of the year and had a decent top ten run. It had a stepp decline in its penultimate week in the top 20, but it was its last week at #18 that gave it just enough gas to earn a spot in the top 40. Chart Run: 18-14-10-8-5-4-3-3-7-10-17-18

#39 - The Hills - The Weeknd

Nov. 21 - #3 (1 week)

When I'm f**ked up, that's the real me This song had just the right edge and unease that made it perfect for the fall, especially around Halloween. With its foreboding tone, and threatening lyric, it was easily the most unsettling #1 on Billboard in years. On my own chart, it quickly peaked, but had a nice slow descent that allowed it to sneak into the top 40 just as the year ended. Chart Run: 19-16-15-10-8-5-3-4-6-14-16-17-17

#38 - Blank Space - Taylor Swift

Jan. 24 - #2 (1 week)

Darling, I'm a nightmare dressed like a daydream This song made my top 200 ever despite its low placement - I think it's the best thing Taylor has ever done, and I think going forward, it is going to be one of my all-time regrets that I didn't move her to #1 instead the week that she peaked. I know this is a song of Taylor poing fun at her tabloid image, but I like it more when I think she is owning up to her own insane behavior in relationships because I think we've all been there.  Chart Run: 13-5-3-2-4-9-12-16-19

#37 - Used to Love You - Gwen Stefani

Nov. 28 (3 weeks)

You can keep all the memories. Gwen Stefani is another song that snuck in during the final weeks of the year, and likely would have placed a little higher if her entire chart run were confined to 2015. It ends up being her best performance of the year in a year that saw her hit the top ten three times - with Spark the Fire and a feature on the Eminem release "Kings Never Die." Chart Run: 15-10-6-4-3-3-3-8-10-12

#36 - Glitterball - Sigma ft Ella Henderson	Aug. 8 - #4 (2 weeks)
I can't look up 'cause my head's a mess This collaboration meant that both of them were no longer one hit wonders on my chart. Ella hit #1 the year previous with Ghost, and Sigma's 2014 hit had been Changing with Paloma Faith. The song benefit from a high debut, but never really capitalized on it, fluttering in the middle of the top ten for two months. Chart Run: 6-6-5-6-6-4-4-6-7-13-16

#35 - Shades of Grey - Oliver Heldens and Shaun Frank     featuring Delaney  Jane	July 4 - #3 (3 weeks)
I see the beauty in the rain. I had a Danger ZOne that allowed my top 20 to get slightly rearranged this year, and this was the biggest benefactor of that, making a huge jump from 18-3. It had an erratic chart run yo-yo-ing the first few weeks before stabilizing and returning to #3 a second time. Mikey should be happy to see this song place. Chart Run: 18-3-9-9-8-6-3-3-6-11-19

#34 - Something New - Axwell /\ Ingrosso	June 13 - #2 (1 week)
We belong to something new. This very nearly hit #1 in June, but was beat to the top by a song that ended up being a huge force. It was bad timing for the song as I grew more disinterested with it shortly thereafter, but it doe s have a killer chorus. Chart Run: 18-16-14-13-10-8-7-4-2-5-8-14-17

#33 - Can't Feel My Face - The Weeknd

Aug. 29 - #4 (1 week)

This I know. The Weeknd makes his second (and final) appearance on the top 40, which is too bad because he was such a force this year. I probably don't listen to as much R&B as I should, but it's acts like The Weeknd who really seem to be moving the genre forward. Its placement benefits from a slow run. In fact, The Weeknd debuted on my top 20 with Earned It way back in April, and hasn't left the top 20 since.  Chart Run: 19-14-14-12-10-8-7-5-4-5-9-11-16

#32 - Overload - Life of Dillon	July 4- #4 (1 week)
You got my heartbeat pumping This might have placed higher if it didn't have such a steep drop in its final week. It had a nice slow burn up the charts up until that point, but the notorious Danger Zone brought it to an early end, and I decided I was done with the song by that point too.  Chart Run: 19-17-16-14-13-11-11-9-8-8-6-5-4-19

#31 - Focus - Ariana Grande

Nov. 21 - #2 (4 weeks)

Fuh-fuh- focus on me! The queen of 2014 - last year she was found on five songs in the year end top 40 - something no one had ever done (and I've had a chart since 1997!), but this year, it's all we will see of her. Disappointed that this flopped on the big chart, but I'm hoping she can turn things around in 2016. Outside of that awful Jamie Foxx sample, I think the song is fantastic. They would have been better to just showcase Ariana.  Chart Run: 8-4-2-2-2-2-6-9-10

#30 - Melody - Oliver Heldens	May 9 - #5 (3 weeks)
LISTEN. Mikey should be delighted to see Oliver make a second appearance on the top 40, and this is probably my favorite thing Oliver has ever done. It seems to be a more melodic and joyous song than some of the other work by him that I have charted. Despite it's #5 peak, It owes it's top 30 position to a lengthy chart run. #29 - Our Own House - Misterwives

Apr. 11 - #5 (3 weeks)

And we swore on that day that it'll never fall apart I feel like I missed my chance to chart the superior song Reflections because I didn't hear until it's time had passed on the charts, but I wasn't about to make that mistake with the incandescent "House". The lead vocalist has such a great, fluttery voice that meshes with the alternative pop they do so well. Chart Run: 20-16-13-11-8-7-6-5-5-5-8-15-19

#28 - Heartbeat Song - Kelly Clarkson

Feb. 28 - #4 (3 weeks)

Been so long I forgot how to turn it up up up up all night. Kelly has a solid history on my charts - certainly in the top 10 and possibly top 5 as she's had, I believe 18 songs hit the top 10, most of which made the top 5, and four of which have hit #1, so there wa a lot of anticipation for her album this year, and resulting disappointment when said album just seemed to fizzle. I'm not sure why this song tanked, and I hope it's not an indication that her best years are behind her.  Chart Run: 16-13-11-10-7-6-4-4-4-6-8-14

#27 - Desire - Years and Years

July 25 - #3 (2 weeks)

I must behave; I must keep fighting. Years and Years and a killer year on my chart, with four songs making the top ten. Desire probably could have charted if it were not simultaneously on the chart with two other Years and Years singles. At one point this summer, Y&Y had several weeks in a row with three songs in the top ten. This one is probably the closest to the 90s club vibe of Rather Be.
