I'm so confused by the hate for Closer. I mean, I get that people like different songs. But it's not some kind of novelty song like Harlem Shake, it's not from an artist that has been overplayed like crazy, the lyrics aren't cheesy, what's the issue? The worst I could see someone saying is its "meh".

See, I'm just happy we have more #1s. We have 12 weeks left and we're already 2 up on 2015 and still have time to hit the 13 total that 2014's chart year had. 2015, even though it had great toppers (Can't Feel My Face, Hello, Uptown Funk) was boring since there were such dry spells when nothing seemed to legitimately challenge the big hits (e.g. Uptown Funk, See You Again, that awkward phase where Cheerleader led quite a handful of weeks despite appearing amazingly weak in terms of performance; I swear that happens every year I follow the charts, namely with Rude and Cheap Thrills)

Much happier with Closer at #1 than freakin' One Dance, now that was crap, plus fueled by streams rather than sales.

Honestly, for me everything sounds compressed and more produced than it should be, and the drop LITERALLY rips off of Over My Head (Cable Car) by The Fray. No, seriously, listen to that song and tell me that this isn't a rip. Cold Water should've been #1, not this thing.

How does that not remind you of that song?

Any early predictions for the next week? How safe is Closer's #1 right now? Early predictions (we don't have kworb's sales prediction, so this may not be completely accurate, but it should still be fairly accurate) Song - Sales - Airplay - Streams Closer - 122k - 63m - 25.5m = 41,200 Cold Water - 63k - 85m - 21m = 33,000 Cheap Thrills - 50k - 155m - 12m = 31,200 Where do you get the airplay data cuz my numbers for Cheap Thrills are 196m

Is the hate for Closer simply because it hit #1? I was completely unaware of the hate up to today.

^ Most likely. I didn't know the song is so polarizing here
Anyway, I'm on the positive side so I'm happy it's #1. Didn't expect Send My Love to return to the top 10, I thought Needed Me's streaming edge will keep it in the top 10

Most of the time, Neilsen's AI will be 75-80% of Kworb's AI. I know I could've explained that better, but I think you should be able to understand.

Closer is a fine #1, but Don't Let Me Down is superb IMO On the brightside, this can finally get Halsey some single success, they should give a push to Ghost though I doubt they'd do it.

People are free to love what they want so I don't resent it being #1 or anything, I am just perplexed by its popularity. I think the vocals on it are banal, and I've heard the song at least 5 times and couldn't sing a single line of it to you.

The worst I could see someone saying is its "meh". That's exactly what I think. I don't hate the song, but there's just nothing super special or exciting about it. It's just this sort of slow-jammy bop very much along the lines of DLMD (which I wasn't crazy about either), with much of the chorus just consisting of two or three notes. Speaking of slow jams, it's amazing how much a lot of these EDM songs sound just like straight-up 2000s Hip-hop/R&B to me. Other songs like Dark Horse, Turn Down for What especially.... I'm aware that there's some intermingling of the genres, but for some songs the labels seem almost interchangeable.

It makes sense that a #1 song would generate more discussion than a non-#1 song. It's no different than how sports individuals and teams who win generate more love/hate.

So does this mean Halsey is no longer a one hit wonder? #questionsremaining since no mayor stars will release a single then That and Sonny Bono has been dead for years.

That makes sense. I've noticed that summer radio latches onto a few songs in May and have completely killed them for me by August. Plus, a lot of mega stars have waited til August or September to start their past eras, so they can have an album out by Q4 for the holidays: Taylor (Speak Now, Red, 1989), Katy (Prism, KP4), Gaga (Artpop, LG5), Rihanna (Loud, Talk That Talk, Unapologetic), Bieber (Purpose), Bruno (Doo-Wops & Hooligans, Unorthodox Jukebox, BM3??)

I'm just disappointed DLMD didn't get to number 1 because I thought that song was 10x better. I'm not a big electronic fan but Chainsmokers are one of the few exceptions for me. Closer overall is fine I guess.

I did a quick edit of the two songs...I had to speed "Closer" up to make the tempo match but the notes and rhythm are almost identical. View AttachmentYou mean just the fade of Cable Car is similar to the drop of Closer.. The choruses are two totally different ones

This is a little off topic, but I always find these music videos interesting (they also do one where the people have to read lyrics of unnamed songs). At 2:23, they have to guess Cheap Thrills. No one got it. A few people guessed it was Sia (one even thinking Chandelier). They guessed BeyoncΓ©, Ariana Grande and Rihanna. CT was #1 in the US for four weeks, was a huge radio smash (possibly the biggest song on CHR this year), sold very well and did well on Spotify, yet no one was able to recognise it from the first 15 seconds. A lot of times in these videos, people just don't know (newer) songs. I remember a few months back, they had teens read the lyrics to Me, Myself & I. One of them claimed to be a G-Eazy fan but didn't even know the song. It's really interesting as you would think a group of young people would know or have been exposed to a huge song, especially one like Cheap Thrills. I remember there was a discussion here a while back about what was considered to be the average listener/general public/idk, and I think this adds to that topic. You could of course say they didn't know it as it wasn't the chorus, but I would consider "come on, come on, turn the radio on" one of the best hooks in the song. A lot of people later in the video knew #5 peaking Same Old Love.
