Recovery Scores Year’s Largest First Week with 600k+, Miley Cyrus Next
June 23, 2010
The record industry just scored its own golden goal. Can a full Recovery be far behind?
Offering conclusive proof that Marshall still matters, Eminem’s aptly named Recovery will score the year’s highest sales debut. Look for a total of between 590-615k for the Shady/Aftermath/Interscope album, easily beating Sade’s 503k back in February. It could also beat his last album, Relapse, which sold 608k in its first week in May ’09.
That’s based on totals from those music retailers who haven’t painted their faces red, white and blue and shown up in South Africa with vuvuzelas in tow for the World Cup.
In addition, Em’s duet with Rihanna, “Love the Way You Lie,” has currently supplanted Katy Perry’s “California Gurls” as the top iTunes download.
With this week’s sales champ, Drake’s Thank Me Later album, looking like #2 in its second week, the next biggest debut will be Hollywood’s Miley Cyrus album, clocking in at 115-125k, as the Disney teen star looks to shed her wholesome Hannah Montana image.
Epic’s Ozzy Osbourne album, Scream, is next at 65-70k, followed by Def Jam/IDJ’s The Roots (35-40k), Kedar Entertainment’s Keith Sweat (20-25k) and JW/Big Machine/Universal Republic’s Jaron & the Long Road (18-21k), which is the new group from one-half of the ‘90s pop-rock duo Evan & Jaron.
The market was up 9% vs. last week, down 9% vs. same week last year and still down 11% year to date, but next week’s chart should offer the first boost in awhile. A year ago, Michael Jackson had the first three chart entries on the HITS Top 50, while Black Eyed Peas topped Soundscan with 88k, just before they added catalog to their currents chart.

Wow, great numbers for Eminem; I was expecting him to do well put not this well. As much as radio insists on painting him as a flop, the general public isn't having it.
That's a pretty poor showing for Miley.

Great sales weeks back to back Drake and now Em.

That's a pretty disappointing projection for Miley Cyrus. Then again, "Can't Be Tamed" is no "Party in the U.S.A." Breakout opened with 300K+, no?

Hopefully Recovery will surpass Relapse in first-week sales. Ouch for Miley.

It will still do as well or better than Bionic with a fraction of Christina's promo.

Epic’s Ozzy Osbourne album, Scream, is next at 65-70k Blah. Black Rain opened with 152,000 in 2007 and "Let Me Hear You scream" is just as big at Rock radio as "I Don't Wanna Stop" was.

well at least miley has a hit coming from this album that will maybe cushion the % drops in the coming weeks, i still think the album will have some life in it. i can seem them rereleasing it at Christmas, considering the EP saw such a surge in those weeks last year

I knew Recovery would do well, I predicted it would be close to Relapse in first week sales. Eminem's selling power is insane. I think it's the best out of anyone.

so im guessing drake will do around 200k. but great for eminem. his albums always have longevity, and this one will likely be no different, especially if "love the way you lie" picks up at radio.

Recovery looks like it will do just as well as Relapse in Week 1.

Great for Eminem. It is amazing how consistently he can pound out 600K plus with albums especially at this point in his career when he isn't getting multiformat huge smashes (well, this cd may change that). Wow I expected a lot more for Miley especially considering her promo.

I wouldn't agree with that. She did Much Music awards in Canada but where else did she perform ? Certainly no Oprah, No AI Finale, etc.

I feel like I have seen her everywhere-interviews, performances of various types. It isn't like no one knows she has a new song out. I would say they both had major promo and both opened with disappointing numbers. Sad-I like both of them. I think Miley has the better chance of getting a major hit though with this cd. A few of the songs are super catchy.

Awesome for Eminem! Really great numbers :) Ouch, for Miley. I thought she would at least get 200k :( I guess the kids from Hannah Montana are not liking her new image. Hopefully it will have legs.

The lead single was "7 Things" which did worse than Can't Be Tamed. she had a big hit (see you again) and a smash album (HM2/Meet Miley C.) before breakout and the still sold well because it was followed by a lot more HM crap (Movie, HM3)...

I meant that "Can't Be Tamed" isn't doing as well as "Party in the U.S.A," in airplay or sales.
Miley performed one one of the morning shows, and she also had that ABC special air Friday (granted, Friday isn't a great night for ratings, but, still, an average of 2.7m viewers is exposure).
What's not to get about the Eminem love? He's one of the most acclaimed acts to emerge in the last 20 years (rap/hip-hop or any genre)- and he's had great commercial success to match. He's got skills. :)

Hannah Montana kids are, now that they are 17+, buying albums from Lady GaGa, Kesha and Katy Perry. That´s what happened to the Jonas Brothers (and what will probably happen to Justin Bieber), is that when you are 15 and under your parents have to approve what you buy (and teeny, wholesome acts get the upper hand), but when that fanbase grows, they move to the acts they were not ¨allowed¨ to listen when younger.

Epic’s Ozzy Osbourne album, Scream, is next at 65-70k Blah. Black Rain opened with 152,000 in 2007 and "Let Me Hear You scre am" is just as big at Rock radio as "I Don't Wanna Stop" was. Yeah, that estimate is far too low for Ozzy. I'd say a 1st week of 100-120k is much more likely. HITS are way off the mark with that one. Their estimate for The Roots is pretty on the mark. They deserve to sell more though. The best hip-hop act around today by far.

Cyrus is trying to go from a wholesome girl next door, thanks to Hannah Montana, to someone who "can't be tamed." Sometimes an image shift like that works, other times it doesn't- it worked for Olivia Newton-John (when she became the "bad girl" in Grease and then had less-wholesome material), but others have been less successful.
