The women dominating this year made this one of the best lists we've ranked. 🔥
OTOH, ranking a Diddy & R. Kelly collab is especially awkward now... 🥴

Today's extras are by this rapper from New Orleans. His first charted single peaked at #11 on the rap chart and #16 on the R&B chart, and contains an interpolation of an earlier song of his titled "Solja Rags".
Ha - Juvenile
This single peaked at #9 rap, #5 R&B, and #19 on the Hot 100, and features Lil Wayne and Mannie Fresh. It popularized the phrase "drop it like it's hot", and was his biggest hit until "Slow Motion" in 2004.

I play "Ha" more than "Back That Thang Up" these days. Mannie Fresh's production goes so hard. Juve ending every bar with "ha" seemed nonsenical, but then I realized he's reminding folks about that NOLA thug life.
Not "Back That Thang Up" having a higher peak on the R&B and Hip Hop chart. lol. I didn't realize how massive it was during its run.

While not my top favorites of the year, I still really liked "You" and "Chanté's Got a Man" - especially "You."
It's really so sad how we lost Jesse Powell last year. :'(

Missy killed it in '99! Then again, she kills it in many years. Love both of those songs!

Today's extras are from his I Am... album. The lead single peaked at #3 on the rap chart and #30 on the R&B chart. Samples "What Child Is This?" by John Rydgren and Bob R. Way, "Why" by Don Robertson, "Nobody Beats The Biz" by Biz Markie, as well as two of his earlier songs, "It Ain't Hard To Tell" and "Street Dreams".

His next single peaked at #8 rap and #18 R&B and features Puff Daddy. Samples "Carmina Burana" by Carl Orff.
Hate Me Now - Nas
There was a bit of controversy surrounding the music video. Puffy wanted his crucifixion scene removed, but the wrong edit was sent to MTV and aired on TRL. Minutes after the video aired, he stormed into the offices of Nas' manager Steve Stoute and hit him on the head with a champagne bottle. Stoute would sue Puffy and receive a $500,000 out-of-court settlement.

Missy caught some flack for "She's A Bitch" during that time. "Bitch" was still perceived as a derogatory term against women, but Missy (as well as Lil' Kim) insisted on using it as a term of empowerment. The song is a reminder of the girl power era in popular music.
"All N' My Grill" is an underrated single in Missy's catalog. I love how Timbaland flipped the strings from the original song. They really caught my attention back then.

Done. I fully support R Kelly being last this time. It is one of his worst songs and ruined a classic sample, well it was more Diddy but yea, it sucks.
