Can't believe I forgot to mention the first time how cheesy the incessant double bass drum pummeling is in the chorus, as if the guys felt the song would be too "pussy" and "vulnerable" without something "tough" behind Ivan's "sissy" crooning.

This is such a blatant attempt to recreate "Fuck You" it's not even funny. You can almost hear the executives' thought process... "we need to get Lloyd a pop hit... let's rip off that Cee-Lo song, make it more explicit and repeat the word pussy over and over, the kids still use that right?... that's that sorted, lunch?". The problem with it is that it completely misses the point of a lot of what made "Fuck You" so excellent. The lyrics are pointlessly vulgar and it's not pleasant. However, a song that's even a fraction of as good as "Fuck You" is still decent, and depending on the radio edit this is a smash waiting to happen. Basically my opinion of the song. Whereas the radio edit of "Fuck You" neutered the song and made it almost unbearable to listen to (its inescapability didn't help, either), the radio edit of "Dedication to My Ex" really classes it up and makes it fun to listen to, as opposed to the mind-numbing trash of the explicit version.

This sucks. What the hell happened to his voice? ...Have you heard anything he's put out since Whitey Ford Sings the Blues?

Not hearing any obvious hits after several listens. "Rain Dance Maggie" was my favorite track, still, with "Look Around" being second.

American Idiot posted while I was typing up a thoughtful reply to Billy and Ron. I knew 17 of those songs on the AltNation list he provided well enough to know they weren't it (even if I didn't remember how they went offhand). The lone possibility left was a song I've streamed from All Access a couple of times in the past few weeks or so and was thus, only faintly familiar with. Lo and behold, it was the mystery song that had been killing me for the past couple days.
Cults "Go Outside." Thanks, everybody. I appreciate your help.

Wow. Avril's "Smile" looks to have tumbled from #37 to #69 to <#125.

So it isn't any of the above you stated? Correct. It is not. This is a massive shot in the dark, but "Magic" by the Sound of Arrows? Thanks for the guess, but unfortunately that wasn't it. This isn't going to help anyone but myself, but if ever I've struggled to remember how the melody went in the past couple days, I can quickly recall it by thinking about the piano melody in Phantom Planet's "California," which I mentioned above. It's not the same melody by any means, but in terms of tempo and rhythm it's similar enough that it jogs my memory of how the unknown song went.

There's a current (recent? brand new?) song that I heard on my semi-local unmonitored, computer-run Alternative station last night and, unbelievably, tonight as well. I know I've heard it before, because it wasn't completely unfamiliar, but I can't, for the life of me, remember what it is, if I ever knew in the first place.
It's a mid-tempo song that I can only describe as indie pop. It might be an indie rock band, but I sure don't remember the song having any guitar. The main melody is mostly descending (its first note is definitely the highest). It's played instrumentally on a set of bells (i.e., the tiny xylophone kind, not hand bells). I don't know that there is a lead vocalist; the vocals sound like a children's choir who sing a continuation of the bell melody in the chorus. The radio station has a weak signal usually and since none of the "children" were right up close to the microphone, lyrics were very hard to pick out, let alone a whole line of them that I could hear well enough to type into Google. Vocally, the only comparisons that were coming to mind were Foster the People a la "Helena Beat," Broken Bells a la "The Ghost Inside," The Naked and Famous, or MGMT.
The best point of reference I could come up with for the melody, as far as rhythm and tempo are concerned, is the piano line in Phantom Planet's "California." Similar idea, anyway.
Any ideas what this is? I dug the song.

I was overjoyed Friday night to hear that not only had my station added the song already, it was #4 on their nightly Top 5 countdown. And except for the first 45 seconds or so, it was otherwise the full version.
They might just kick themselves out of #1 on my personal chart, something they seem to do at least once or twice an album cycle. In fact, I don't know if they've even had any official, full-on singles miss the top spot before.

I remember streaming this song about a month ago after seeing a banner ad for it over at ThePRP.com, I believe.
It was amusing, but they damn near ruined the song by the end once they dragged motorboating into it. What are they, 5? Smothering my face in there = hot and amazing. Accompanying that with a mood-killing, juvenile sound effect = stupid.

My friend, a bigger Stabbing Westward fan than myself, told me about Chris's new band I want to say anywhere from 2003-2005. The one thing I remember taking away from that conversation (aside from the band name) was him telling me they categorized themselves with the regrettable tag, "dreamo." And now this is the first time I've ever read anything about them promoting a recording in all these years. WTF. I was wondering if it was this band. They opened for us when they came to CT. Stabbing Westward was my favorite band in middle school so that was a nuts experience. Wow. You guys must be pretty big around those parts (and/or a new band involving the former singer for Stabbing Westward must draw a surprisingly small amount of water in 2011. Or whenever it was.)

I've heard this song 15 to 20 times by now, I'd estimate. Tonight, though, I totally heard this as a Foo Fighters song with slightly more polished production. Wonder how many snobs would actually give this song a chance if it were Foo Fighters instead of Seether?

The most logical choice.
"The group is also favoring an unedited version of "Buried Alive" as the album's fourth single..."
Interesting. Wonder if the record company will let them get away with a big barrier of entry like that at radio, especially since it's the fourth single.

Don't get me wrong I hate kesha and all she stands for with an intense passion but... Translation: "Ke$ha is my guilty pleasure, so..." Calling you out. Not making fun, though, because while I initially hated "Tik Tok," it's so catchy that resistance is futile. She's got songs I like that I don't even feel guilty about, she's charismatic, and pretty cute, too.

I don't fully agree with that as "You've Seen The Butcher" stuck around on the active rock chart for at least 20 weeks and almost hit the top 10 as a follow-up to "Diamond Eyes" which stuck around slightly longer and barely hit the top 10. While the drop-off was much more severe on alternative, when you talk about drop-off in chart performance from a lead single to a follow-up single, the difference on active rock was pretty frickin' tiny. I don't follow Active anywhere near as closely as Alternative, so I stand corrected. And given the direction of Alternative radio, it's not like Deftones exactly fits in that well anymore. Which is a shame, because you'd think that despite their usual heaviness, their proven track record of integrity and die-hard fans would grant them a lifetime free pass on the format at this point. My Active-leaning Alt station certainly did their part, at least.

The (almost) full version, finally found on YouTube:
It should go without saying that "Bullet" is the "Worker & Parasite" cartoon and that I'm Krusty.

I usually root for Everlast, but for whatever reason, this time around the downtrodden blue-collar lyrics feel like he's become a caricature of himself. Frankly, I'm shocked it's already on the Alternative chart.

Pro-wrestling and MMA fans are stoked. As much as I'd like to believe the label forced their hand on this cheesy single choice, that doesn't excuse the band for writing it in the first place.

I'm a "Sextape" fanatic (sounds like I have a bit of a fetish out of context). ;) It might be a bit to late though. I agree. If they were to have any shot left at all, it should've happened as soon as "Butcher" tumbled off the charts. Radio promotion for this album, beyond the title track, has unfortunately seemed pretty half-assed.

Actually, it reminds me a bit of A Tendency To Start Fires. So I streamed the song on YouTube, since it's easier than fetching the song off my external. First of all, I'm relieved I still recognized the song, as I was afraid I wouldn't, since the album never clicked with me, which is why I eventually sold the CD several years ago. But yes, I do hear the similarities, particularly in the vocal melodies (mostly in the verses) and tempo. Not so much in the guitars. The bf: You know those death metal logos where you can't read any of the letters or tell what the f**k it says? I'm beast at those! :)

I wish this band would go away, never to be heard from again. Enough is enough with this hollow, roid-rage bullcrap. I can't imagine Motograter was even 1/5 this obnoxious. I imagine they were probably closest to something like L.D. 50-era Mudvayne, am I wrong?
