What disappointing news. I thought it was all just a rumour, and now it's all true...
I've only listened to AT40 a couple of times, but I've enjoyed it each time. I like hearing Casey Kasem presenting the official R&R CHR/Pop chart. His show is so simple, without the typical reliance on dumb jokes and call-in contests.
I hope AT40 will continue to use R&R, but it doesn't seem very likely with talk of internet technology. The thing I dislike most about request shows is that one can never tell whether it's real or rigged. Rick Dees' request shows are a joke. And then with online voting, you get a small number of crazy fans sending in a zillion votes.
I do understand why execs might feel the show needs to be energized. The only thing that I wanted added to AT40 was more song clips (played when Casey Kasem mentioned past hits).
I'm glad Casey Kasem is staying on for AT20, but I will still miss hearing him on AT40. I had always hoped that my local station would switch to AT40 so I could hear Casey Kasem on a regular basis, but no chance of that now. :(

I guess "Me Against the Music" will peak at #11 (hopefully no lower). :( I was just starting to like the song.
Michelle Branch is the type of artist with songs that can last a long time on the charts, so "Breathe" may continue to hold and then climb. I'm not really into the song yet, however.
Wow, I'm impressed by "The Voice Within"... a straight out ballad doing so well. It sounds vaguely like a song I've heard before, but I'm liking it on first listen.
I heard Fuel for the first time today. I can't believe it's in the upper 30s already. It sounds kind of harsh, but I think a few more listens and I'll get used to it (my stupid local station hasn't added it yet, so I had to hear it on Rick Dees).
I hope "Hey Ya" can get to #1 next week (or this week, doesn't matter). I wouldn't mind if 3 Doors Down gets another week at the top, though.

I wouldn't mind another week for 3 Doors Down at the top... Beyonce's gains and audience impressions are higher, so there's always next week for "Baby Boy".

I was hoping for "Here Without You" to make #1 before "Baby Boy" because I assumed 3 Doors Down would lose steam first.
I'm still optimistic that "Baby Boy" will get to the top. The two songs are only 19 spins apart as of this morning, and "Baby Boy" has higher audience impressions than "Here Without You".

I'm glad Z95.3 in Vancouver abandoned its Hot AC leaning "experiment". All they seemed to do was to stop adding new rap/hop-hop songs while overplaying a bunch of already overplayed songs from the last couple of years. They didn't compensate for the decrease in rap/hip-hop music by adding more pure pop and pop-rock songs, resulting in a mostly stagnant playlist.
I appreciate the fact that Vancouver still has a CHR/Pop station, but I still think Z95's playlist is rather boring. Maybe it's just me, but I like more new songs, both pop-rock and hip-hop/rap, rather than hearing the same "new" songs for a month and a half. I know a lot of teenagers prefer The Beat to Z95, while most others are glued to the 70s/80s/90s rock mix of Jack FM.

I heard the song for the first time tonight on one of those one-song-versus-another radio polls. It did seem like a mess, but it was my first listen, and the song may grow on me.
I was more surprised by the fact that almost everyone calling in was voting for it, with people saying that it was a great song (tonight was apparently the third time the song won).
With the disappointing chart run of "American Life" and the questionable current popularity of both Britney Spears and Madonna, I'm not sure they can go top 10 with this song. I'll hope for the best, though. :)

I thought "Party" was catchy at first, but now I'm beginning to tire of it.
Lee's a guy from Niagara Falls (I don't know what his full name is). Barlow is Tom Barlow from Toronto.

When I first heard this song, I found the "if you wanna" parts extremely irritating. The whole song, from the vocals to the lyrics, seemed rather juvenile (I guess it's partly due to the whole Lizzie McGuire image of Hiliary Duff).
I still find the aforementioned parts irritating, but the song is catchy and really gets into your head. As simple as it is, I find the "so yesterday" message sort of nice, too. I mean, I always tell myself (unsuccessfully) to quit worrying about stuff since it will mean nothing in a week anyway. :)

The Vancouver station began with the original versions of both "I'm Real" and "Ain't It Funny" before introducing the Ja Rule remix versions.
Was Avril Lavigne's "I Don't Give" an official single, or did some stations just decide to play it?

Well, they named their band after the Billy Bob Thorton movie called "A Simple Plan", so maybe MTV confused the two.
Apparently, this is a quote from one of the band members... "It's from a movie called A Simple Plan. We left off the A. We're from Canada, we don't need another A." (quote supposedly came from a Simple Plan special on Fuse, though I never watched it so can't say for sure).

I think the track is annoying. It tries hard to shock when it's pretty much run-of-the-mill stuff. At least "Sunscreen" was well produced.

Would some public libraries carry old backcopies of the magazine? It would be nice if it were more readily available somewhere.

Celine Dion's songs always seem to drop when stations go all-Christmas and it looks like this one will be no exception. I suspect this will leap into the top 10 once January rolls around, but will continue to slip until then. Since it always takes songs forever to move up on AC, the same songs will be around and "Taking Chances" will continue to rise in the new year.

Wait... Celine covered Heart? LOL, I heard this on my pop station this morning when they were playing clips from the album. They were singing along to it.

Only 55 stations so far? What are they waiting for... they need to check whether she is still a core artist at this format?

They should release the song and not reveal the artist. Let the listeners decide on the song, not the name. That sounds like a REALLY good idea. Although her voice is recognizable...... Maybe the teen crowd wouldn't... she could make up a pen name like Cell On, to tap into the cell phone craze.

I, for one, love the AC songs that stay on AC. Yeah, me too. Enough with "The Sweet Escape" and "Big Girls Don't Cry". I liked "When Did You Fall..." a lot, and was hoping Chris Rice would have a follow-up.

This song is perfect for AC... it is definitely quick, by AC standards.

That sort of reminds me of Hot AC, or some of the Hot ACs I've heard.
Perhaps the "young AC" station could keep the songs softer, with mid-tempo songs and ballads, going back to 1990 at the earliest; and also pulling out slower songs from the CHR/Pop chart which aren't played that much anymore.
I'm not sure if the AC chart songs from the last 15 years would have much appeal for younger people since many of the artists (at least up until these last couple of years) were older or older-skewing like Rod Stewart, Elton John, John Tesh or Don Henley.

I hate this song... I hear it enough on Pop and would rather not hear it on AC as well. I sort of like the remix with the rapper.

I think Rimes still has too much country cred to be classed as AC-only. "Nothing 'Bout Love Makes Sense" was pretty big when it came out, at least, and that wasn't too long ago. I think she could be successful (possibly moreso than now?) if she chose to go down that path, though, with songs like her and Ronan Keating doing "The Last Thing on My Mind" coming to mind. Rimes' last album was "back to country", and it seems like she got back some of her popularity on country radio. Releasing songs to AC became secondary compared to a few years ago, when that seemed to be her focus (along with sending her songs to pop). This was similar to what Faith Hill did as well... her last album was mostly country material. When I think of AAA-exclusive artists, I don't usually think of Norah Jones even though she has been doing well there recently.

It seems like AC radio isn't doing much for these AC-only artists these days...
In the top 20, there are only 4 true AC-only artists: Michael Buble, Jim Brickman, Josh Groban and Rod Stewart.
And even these AC-only artists will find it difficult to get success beyond their second single at AC, because of overplay and ridiculous longevity of their first single.
Most of the spots on the chart are taken by pop or Hot AC cross-overs including Gwen Stefani, Nickelback, Daughtry, Beyonce and Snow Patrol.
As I also listen to CHR/Pop and Hot AC, I personally tune in to AC to NOT hear these same artists. But I suppose I'm in the minority.
There are also a few country crossovers, which are good.

I much agree with this. Not to mention overplaying the same old recurrents and golds to death.
Has Mediabase not been consistent with the old R&R recurrent rule? What rule had Mediabase been using lately?

I think there was a topic on this a long time ago, but I was looking at the chart the other day, and the chart has hardly any AC-exclusive songs.
I like almost all the songs in the top 20, but many first made an impact on Hot AC or pop, and are more Hot AC-ish: The Fray, John Mayer, Snow Patrol, Gnarls Barkley, Natasha Bedingfield, Nickelback, Rob Thomas...
The chart used to be dotted by one or two nice light-rock Hot AC songs by Matchbox Twenty or Five for Fighting, but now, it's almost the main type of new song that is played.
Maybe I'm more bothered by this since I also listen to Hot AC radio and pop radio, and when I switch to AC, I want to hear different songs. You don't hear Josh Groban or Rod Stewart anywhere else, so I would prefer more of those types of songs...

I like Sister Hazel, but this song has not grown on me yet. AC isn't really the optimal format for this song.

I like it more than the first single. LOL, JCMF3. It's perfectly timed for AC so it can peak in February 2008.

What a shame... I've mostly lost interest in R&R since Billboard took over. I've even stopped saving the chart since the website format makes it so difficult and time consuming. :(
